Shortridge Academy is seeking an energetic and creative Science teacher who has classroom experience and strong laboratory skills to teach high school Biology, Chemistry, Physical Science and Environmental Science. We are academically progressive and seek professionals who are equally forward-thinking. The right candidate should have a Bachelor of Science degree; a Master’s degree is preferred. This is a full-time position (40 hours) and includes additional responsibilities, such as proctoring study halls and supervising free time.
Shortridge Academy is a small, co-ed, year-round, boarding school that nurtures the cognitive, emotional and social development of bright yet struggling adolescents within a therapeutically supportive, educational community. Our unique Positive Youth Development approach includes partnering with students and their families to identify strengths, develop skills, prepare for traditional academic environments, and pursue healthy, productive adulthood. We accomplish our mission using clearly defined, goal-directed plans, evidence-based strategies, and a college preparatory curriculum that is respectful of learning differences. Our goals, grounded in Positive Youth Development, include: building healthy decision-making skills; establishing and maintaining trusting relationships; embracing and implementing a healthy lifestyle; recognizing and developing individual leadership potential; creating personal goals; developing resiliency and self-efficacy; and establishing a more positive role within the family.
The majority of our students are bright underachievers who have experienced challenges in the classroom in their previous schooling, revealed in a more recent decline in academic performance, or a longer history of struggling in school due to attention issues, executive functioning challenges, depression, anxiety and family dysfunction. Academic and therapeutic curricula at Shortridge is designed to motivate and engage all students to reach their potential and become lifelong learners; we provide a relatively normalized environment and embrace technology as part of a student’s academic day.
