Hiram College is committed to building an inclusive and vibrant educational environment and the student population is diverse in many ways, including economic background, ethnic heritage, and educational interests.The Communication Manager is the communications representative for Hiram College, reporting directly to the Director of Strategic Marketing and Media Relations but also working with the President or other members of the Cabinet. The staff member in this position acts in a variety of roles (content writer, project manager, proofreader, or copy editor as appropriate) on a wide range of communication needs for the College. These communication needs could include messages to internal constituencies, features or news articles, the college magazine, emergency communications, and remarks for campus events. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following*:
• Serve as a primary copywriter and editor on a variety of communication projects, feature stories promotional materials, publications, website content, social media content, and advertising purposes; proof content submitted by various departments.
• Oversee an internal communication plan for the College and develop procedures for communication to constituent groups; work with all direct parties to ensure procedures are followed.
• Plan, draft, and compile internal news for faculty, staff, students, alumni, trustees, or other members of the Hiram community.
• Write content and manage the distribution of personalized student success stories including accomplishments and activities to local media, high schools, government representatives, students, and support networks through the Merit Pages software.
• Assist as writer or editor for key strategic and/or operational documents for the campus community, in conjunction with the appropriate constituents, to ensure professionally written and formatted documents.
• Create procedures for communication to constituent groups; work with all direct parties to ensure procedures are followed.
• Develop talking points or draft spoken remarks for campus events; ghostwrite messages for print or electronic communication from Hiram College leadership to constituent groups.
• Work with the Director of Strategic Marketing and Media Relations to draft communications regarding urgent campus issues; assist with emergency communication execution.

Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree is required, preferably in English, communication, writing, journalism, or related field; Master’s degree is preferred
• Minimum of two to five years of experience working in communication and project management
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to adapt to varying communication styles while maintaining an overall college style
• Excellent computer skills with expertise in writing software, including Microsoft Word, Pages, and Google Docs
• Understanding of automated email marketing tools
• Demonstrated comfort with senior administrators and collaborative writing projects
• Ability to work independently with a sense of initiative and confidentiality
• Attention to detail
• Willingness to receive constructive criticism and ability to offer it during collaborative writing projects
• Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize tasks
• Ability to work under deadlines
• Ability to maintain confidentiality on sensitive matters
