Job Title: Solid Waste Scale Operator
Purpose of the Position:
Responsible for providing customer service, performing work associated with weighing vehicles delivering waste to the landfill or transfer station and recording pertinent data associated with this process.
Minimum Education, Training and/or Experience (required at time of hire):
High School or equivalent; Minimum of one (1) year experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Additional Training and Experience:
SWANA Operator training required within first twelve months of hire.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation:
Possession of a valid State issued driver’s license.
Physical Requirements:
The work is primarily very heavy work requiring exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 30 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, fingering, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking. The work is performed outdoors in seasonal weather conditions and in an environment with heavy equipment and machinery that could result in bodily harm to self or others.
Essential Functions of the Position:
Weigh trucks, reads scales, record pertinent information, and direct traffic at the landfill or transfer station.
Responsible for initial waste screening to ensure illegal/prohibited items are not accepted.
Fill out weigh ticket on each vehicle and records information to applicable account.
Compute bills, issue receipts, record amount received, and reconcile banking statement.
Collect tipping fees and make bank deposits.
Review and verify records and reports to ensure that required information is provided and is correct.
Compute a variety of arithmetic calculations using a calculator or computer.
Provide information to patrons concerning dumping fees and locations.
Perform custodial duties to clean and maintain scale house.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Abilities:
Knowledge of the operation of a solid waste scale and the associated peripheral equipment used in weighing and recording weights of vehicles delivering waste to the landfill.
Knowledge of pertinent ordinances, policies, and procedures associated with waste disposal.
Knowledge of basic clerical and bookkeeping principles.
Ability to accurately read scales and record data.
Ability to prepare clear and concise reports from recorded data.
Ability to screen communications and, based on content, handle independently or route to proper source.
