The primary purpose of this position is to perform a very wide range of patient personal care, diagnostic services, treatment and charting activities in a psychiatric or substance abuse treatment unit. The incumbent performs duties in such a way as to encourage patient efforts towards goals for recovery and maintain a safe an therapeutic environment while promoting a sense of worth and dignity for the patient. The incumbent provides personal nursing care to substance abuse and psychiatric patients, and serves as an active, participating member of the health care team. The objectives for care are set in the treatment plan as established by the multidisciplinary treatment team.

Individual Occupational Requirement (IOR): An IOR is a basic requirement that must be met in order to qualify for entry into this job series, and it is something that can’t be waived.
The IOR for the GS-06 grade level is: Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: The work is sedentary. Typically, the work places no unusual physical demands on the employee. However, there may be some walking, standing, bending, and carrying of light items like papers, CD images, supplies, and books.
