Summary of Job Description
This position demands creativity, curiosity, and compassion. Visual artists, performance artists, writers, designers, musicians, and all creative types are highly encouraged to apply. The Humanities Teacher provides high-quality instruction in language arts and inquiry (history) for 3rd-4th and 5th-6th grade students in the Peregrine Elementary program, children ages 8 to 12 years. We teach these subjects in a heavily integrated way, often through the arts. This position requires a combination of individual prep work, facilitation of thematically integrated project-based learning, documentation, classroom management, and collaboration with other teaching staff to deliver enrichment lessons.
Hours
Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. (or alternatively, 9 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.)
Responsibilities/Duties
In collaboration with head teachers, design and implement engaging and age-appropriate lessons, activities, and projects in language arts and inquiry (history) for 3rd-4th and 5th-6th grade classes in the Peregrine Elementary program, children ages 8 to 12 years
Coordinate with head teachers to create weekly and long-term thematic units of study, if applicable
Create and maintain a positive classroom community that meets students emotional and physical needs
Supervise children alone or with the assistance of other teaching staff
Participate in documentation of student work, including written reports and portfolios
Communicate effectively and frequently with parents about program and school matters and about the needs and progress of their individual child
Attend faculty meetings and parent conferences
Participate in school events and other extensions of classroom work and school program
Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Lifelong learner
Expert-level knowledge in an area of the humanities or arts
M.A./M.S. or teaching credential is preferred; B.A./B.S. and a combination of relevant work experience is the minimum requirement
Experience working with young children in a professional setting
Understanding of and commitment to Peregrine Schools mission and philosophy of progressive education
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Strong interpersonal skills: ability to deal effectively with a diversity of individuals at all organizational levels
