Summary/Objective

Under management and supervision from the Coding Manager, the Medical Records Technician responds to medical record requests and validates proper authorization to release patient information and follows processes for requests of information in accordance with privacy regulations regarding patient confidentiality. The technician is responsible for responding timely to all medical record requests, organizing the request queue, internal tracking through Share Point, and working in the billing system software. The ability to engage all requests with professional responses is an essential function of this position. The technician needs to have good organizational skills, the ability to follow written and oral instructions, and can work independently and productively with little supervision.

Functions:

• Review and verify releases of information in the EMR(s) prior to responding to medical record requests.
• Respond to medical record requests.
• Organize the medical record request queue and keep it current with comments and notes.
• Follow processes for medical record requests on Share Point.
• Enter notes or work claims in AthenaNet as needed that correspond to medical record requests.
• Communicate and follow up on releases of information requests.
• Check the faxes in Sfax and create events for the Lead Medical Record Technician and assist with all medical record requests as needed.
• Answer phone calls related to medical record requests.

Experience (Required):

• At least one year of experience in an office setting, preferably in a healthcare or hospital setting.
• Must have the ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive matters with discretion and tact.
• Must have a general knowledge of and the ability to maintain HIPAA privacy requirements.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Basic knowledge of word, excel, share point, and power point.
• Able to work independently.

• Experience working in a medical office or a hospital setting with medical records or other HIM position(s).
• Basic understanding of medical terminology
