Job Summary: Responsible for administering radiopharmaceuticals to patients for diagnostic purposes. May also perform radioimmunoassay studies.
Essential Job Responsibilities: Explains test procedures to patients and prepares dosages of radio-pharmaceuticals. Administers radiopharmaceuticals to patients by mouth, injection, inhalation, or other means. Positions patients on table or special chair. Adheres to safety standards that keep the radiation dose to patients and workers as low as possible. Starts a gamma scintillation camera, or scanner, which creates images of the distribution of a radiopharmaceutical as it localizes in, and emits signals from, the patient’s body. Operates the camera to detect and map the radioactive drug in the patient’s body to create diagnostic images. Monitors the characteristics and functions of tissues or organs in which the drugs localize to determine the presence of disease on the basis of biological changes rather than changes in organ structure. Produces the images on a computer screen or on film for a physician to interpret. Keeps patient records and records the amount and type of radionuclides received, used, and discarded. Performs radioimmunoassay computerized studies as requested that assess the behavior of a radioactive substance inside the body to determine levels of hormones or of therapeutic drugs in the body. Greets people, answers phones and E-mail several times a day. Completes logs and records. Performs all phases of diagnostic Nuclear Medicine including imaging of all age groups: pediatrics to geriatrics, radiation safety, and quality control of all equipment and provides necessary technical and clerical functions to facilitate excellent patient care. This job requires employees to demonstrate initial and annual competencies in order to remain in the position. Performs other duties as assigned by management.
Education: Graduate of approved School of Nuclear Medicine.
Licenses / Certifications: Certification by NMTCB or AART, Maryland State License. American Heart Association BLS required (must obtain within 6 months of hire).
Experience: One year experience as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist preferred.
Work Schedule: Hours vary, may include evenings, weekends. Will include Holiday and On-Call rotation.
Physical Requirements: Standing for long periods of time. Lifting and moving of patients, files and light loads. Frequent use of hands (Example: use of computer keyboards, injecting patients, etc) Reaching, stooping and bending. Visual acuity and manual dexterity.
Performance Requirements: Knowledge of o The physical sciences, biological effects of radiation exposure, radiation protection and procedures. o Radiopharmaceuticals, imaging techniques, and computer applications. o Safety, infection control, quality assurance, and confidentiality regulations. Skill in o Sensitively understanding patients’ physical and psychological needs. o Paying attention to details and in following instructions. o Administering radiopharmaceuticals and in operating camera and computer for imaging. Ability to o Explain the procedure to patients in calm, accurate manner. o Position patient and operate equipment effectively using mechanical abilities and manual dexterity. o Interact effectively with physicians and other clinicians as a team member. o Perform work accurately with attention to detail within specified hours. o Handle frequent interruptions and to adapt to changes in the workload. o Work independently with minimal direct supervision and as a motivated team player. o Set priorities and problem solving. o Communicate effectively (verbal and written).
