For more than 75 years, Via Services’ mission has been to empower people with disabilities and their families to grow, develop and thrive by providing essential skill-building, therapeutic and recreational programs. Our flagship program, Via West, provides year-around weekend respite camps, as well as longer duration summer camps, for children and adults with a broad range of disabilities.

Following a year+ closure due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Camp Via West will be in operation, serving clients beginning in mid-September.

Job Summary: As a member of the Camp Leadership Team, the Medical Services Manager (RN) is responsible for overseeing the health and safety of campers and staff. The Medical Services Manager (RN) is responsible for supervising the Medical Intern Program, providing health care training for all staff, participating in Via’s college and university relations programs.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Interns and medical support staff

Duties/Responsibilities

• Ensure compliance with American Camp Association guidelines for nursing at special needs camp through evidence-based policies, procedures and processes. For example, ensure each participant and staff member has on file a health history and examination form as required.
• Maintain an effective system for health screening and preparation of medication administration records (MARs) for arriving campers and staff
• Conduct inventory of supplies and place orders when necessary, ensuring timely arrival of supplies
• Establish and follow appropriate health care standards, including record keeping in the health care logs, disposal of medical waste, managing and safeguarding medications, and utilizing approved and standing orders
• Participate in and lead specific areas of staff training for both nursing and general staff, pertaining to Via West health and safety, first aid, and use of universal precautions for infection control
• Take charge of all deliverables and learning activities to meet outcomes and objectives for the Via West Community Health Nurse Internship program through formal training days, on-site preceptorship, clinical conferences and oversight of medication administration, treatments, and nursing assessments for participants and staff

• Minimum ASN is required
• Current California Registered Nurse license in good standing is required
• At least three years of professional experience working with children and adults with physical and developmental disabilities is required.
• Current CPR and First Aid certification
• Ability to read and follow directions on medication labels, health forms, physician orders, and parent letters.
• Ability to observe, assess and address sanitation and safety conditions of the camp.
• Working knowledge of G-Suite for email, document sharing and calendar
• Ability to become proficient in new systems
• Ability to document and train others on workflow processes
• Effective and professional written and oral communication skills
• Must have reliable motor vehicle transportation, job related mileage is reimbursed

Physical Requirements:

• Physical mobility and endurance to perform tasks while standing/walking for long periods of time (60 minutes or more).
• Ability to lift/assist campers and staff.
• Ability to quickly get to remote locations on camp property over uneven terrain.
• Possess endurance to meet emergency needs.
• Ability to drive to off-camp health provider, physician, or emergency treatment locations.
• Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
• Must be able to lift up to 45 pounds at times.

• Willingness to work variable hours, including evenings, weekends and select holidays.

• Valid Driver’s License.
• Clean driving record and an ability to drive agency vehicles with participants and staff.
• Proof of continuous automobile insurance coverage as required by the State of California.
• At least 21 years of age
