Job Overview

The Accounting Manager manages the Accounting Department. Ensures work is promptly and accurately compiled, posted, and reconciled to the appropriate accounts. Responsible for financial reports, operating budgets, and financial statements for the Credit Union. Maintains accounting records and identifies trends for management.

Major Responsibilities

• Ensures that daily work is promptly and accurately compiled, posted, and reconciled to the appropriate general ledger accounts. Reviews and analyzes monthly, quarterly, and annual reports. Ensures financial information has been recorded accurately and within target dates. Oversees month end closing processes, including monthly financial statements and quarterly compliance recordings. Prepares monthly financial reports for the Board of Directors in addition to quarterly and semi annual reports for regulators.
• Assist with development and preparation of the annual operating and capital budgets. Monitors costs and expenses to support growth projections and strategic planning. Responsible for financial analysis and information needed to ensure an accurate statement of the Credit Union’s financial position to various regulatory agencies in addition to preparation of regulatory and governmental reports. 
• Manages Accounting Department staff. Provides leadership to personnel through effective goal setting, delegation, and communication. Conducts meetings as necessary. Provides personnel administration and mentoring of the staff assigned including schedules, job assignments, training, performance reviews, and staff development.
• Responsible for the operation, maintenance, and supervision of the general ledger processing system. Ensures proper posting, reconciliation, and maintenance of all general ledger accounts including the preparation of appropriate subsidiary accounts, depreciation, and amortization schedules.
• Maintains effective communication and coordination with Credit Union personnel and management. Maintains regular contact with other departments to obtain information and/or to correct transactions as needed.
• Performs financial forecasting and reconciliation of internal accounts. Updates policies and procedures for compliance with National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) regulations. Interacts with NCUA examiners.
• Informs management of any irregularity, shortage, unfaithful performance, suspicious activity, etc. within the Credit Union. Ensures the Credit Union’s professional reputation is projected and maintained when dealing with outside vendors, governmental agencies, and outside business and accounting professionals.
• Creates and manages security procedures. Ensures compliance of procedures and the physical security of sensitive equipment/records maintained within the department. Complies with retention schedule of accounting records; enters information to cold storage and discards according to determined dates.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements

• Five years to eight years of similar or related experience.
• (1) A bachelor’s degree, or (2) achievement of formal certifications recognized in the industry as equivalent to a bachelor’s degree (e.g., information technology certifications in lieu of a degree).
• Work involves extensive personal contact with others and is of a personal or sensitive nature. Motivating, influencing, and/or training others is key at this level. Outside contacts become important and fostering sound relationships with other entities (companies and/or individuals) becomes necessary and often requires the ability to influence and/or sell ideas or services to others.
• Minimum of 5 years increasing responsibility/experience in an accounting environment.
• Thorough knowledge of accounting principles and practices and possess ability to prepare, read, and interpret financial statements.
• Familiar with and have experience in all types of investments, such as CDs, money market, treasury bills, mutual funds, bonds, etc.
• Possess excellent interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with members and employees both in person and by phone
• Possess good analytical abilities to make decisions and solve problems and have some experience/education in management.
• Possess ability to operate PC and related software, calculator, and other related office equipment with good speed and accuracy.
• Physical qualifications include sitting at a computer for extended periods of time and being able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
