Plans and coordinates the activities of the agriculture park grounds, buildings, and related structures; oversees the care, maintenance, repair activities of the agriculture park grounds; and performs other related duties as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
This class is distinguished by its responsibility for planning, coordinating, and overseeing the agricultural maintenance program and activities to include the care, maintenance, and repair of agriculture park grounds, buildings and related structures.

This is the first class specification approved for the new class, AGRICULTURE PARK MAINTENANCE SPECIALIST, effective March 1, 2023.

Training and Experience: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in horticulture, landscape architecture, agriculture, sustainability horticulture or a related field and two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in the field of agriculture, horticulture or landscape architecture or chemical treatment, as applied to the care, maintenance and upkeep of agriculture parks or agricultural landscape areas.
License Requirements: Possession of a valid Hawaii State driver’s license (Type 3).
Knowledge of: the principles and practices of agriculture; propagation and cultivation methods and techniques; soil characteristics; methods and techniques of re-sodding and re-building large fields; basic principles of controlling plant pests and diseases; kinds of fertilizers and their uses; operation and maintenance of grounds maintenance equipment and tools; report writing; principles and practices of supervision.
Ability to: plan and establish an agriculture grounds maintenance program; detect and recognize plant diseases and pests; recommend techniques and procedures in propagation, cultivation, chemical treatment, and general care and maintenance of plants, trees, fruits, vegetables; prepare cost estimates for material, equipment and supplies; research data and prepare reports; communicate clearly, orally and in writing; and foster good relationships.

Vacation
Eligible employees earn up to 21 days of vacation per year, with a maximum year-to-year carry over of 90 days. Eligibility to accrue vacation begins with the first work day.
Sick Leave
Eligible employees accumulate up to 21 days of sick leave per year. Eligibility to accrue sick leave begins with the first work day, and there is no limitation on the amount of sick leave that may be accumulated.
Retirement Plan

These benefits are administered by the Hawaii Employer-Union Health Benefits Trust Fund, and contributions are payroll deducted.
Group Life Insurance
Group life insurance is provided at no cost to eligible employees.
Holidays
The County observes 13 holidays per year (14 in an election year).
Deferred Compensation Plan
Eligible employees may participate in the Island Savings Plan (a deferred compensation plan as provided under Section 457 of the Internal Revenue Code.) This is a supplemental retirement savings plan that allows for the investment of tax-deferred contributions into a variety of investment options.
Flex Spending Plan
Eligible employees can also participate in the County’s Flexible Spending plan, a way to set aside a portion of pay, before taxes, to pay for qualifying dependent care or medical expenses.
Employee Assistance Program
The County also offers a voluntary assistance program which provides its employees and their family members with free professional and confidential assistance in overcoming personal and work related problems.
Training
The County provides its employees with a variety of up-to-date training opportunities (i.e., computer application, professional seminars, heavy equipment operation, administrative & clerical skills, personal safety, etc.) to help them increase their knowledge, gain new skills, and to be more satisfied and effective in their jobs.
Leave Sharing
The County’s leave sharing program allows employees to donate accumulated vacation leave credits to a qualified fellow employee who has a serious personal illness or injury.
