The Design School at Arizona State University seeks applications for full-time faculty appointment in Industrial Design beginning in August 2022. The candidate selected will also be Head of the Industrial Design program. This position is open at the rank of Associate Professor, Professor or Professor of Practice, depending on experience and qualifications.
The successful candidate will see themselves as a dedicated change agent utilizing their knowledge of the design professions and how design thinking along with lessons from design history can change the world; will challenge traditional design curricula with a vision for the future of design education; and will recognize and communicate a leadership role within the wider context of design management within organizations. The successful candidate will actively participate in the teaching of the Industrial Design Bachelor of Science in Design, Master of Industrial Design and Master of Science in Design degree programs. The candidate will have a research/creative activity portfolio that has gained national or international recognition.
The new Head of Industrial Design will engage allied disciplines across the University, make teaching assignments for the Industrial Design faculty, engage alumni and the local professional community, and mentor junior faculty in their work within and beyond The Design School. The candidate should possess leadership experience in industrial design institutions or organizations, and demonstrate the potential to transform curriculum and faculty in an innovative academic environment.
Our top ranked industrial design program maintains a tradition of academic excellence and has become a leader in transdisciplinary teaching, processes of innovation and design research. Faculty in Industrial Design have established research and design projects with corporations such as Herman Miller, Intel Corporation, Motorola, Procter & Gamble, General Electric, Disney Consumer Product, LG Electronics, and Samsung America. Program faculty have expertise in many areas of industrial design including human factors and ergonomics, furniture design, consumer electronics, branding, universal design, social sustainability, design education, digital visualization, rapid prototyping, innovation studies, and UI / UX.
The Industrial Design Program at ASU focuses on a new model of transdisciplinary product development called Integrated Innovation. The primary goal of Integrated Innovation is to produce transdisciplinary design solutions that:
• Meet people’s needs in unexpected ways;
• Create value in the marketplace; and
• Improve society and the environment.
Students graduating from the program possess the skills and knowledge to be able to use design towards the social, economic and environmental challenges facing the twenty-first century. Graduates from the Bachelor of Science in Design (BSD), Master of Industrial Design (MID), and Master of Science in Design (MSD) programs have found employment in design consultancies, manufacturing corporations and universities and some have embarked on entrepreneurial careers. Industrial design graduates work at companies such as IDEO, Ammunition, Lunar Design, Smart Design, Whipsaw, Frog Design, Teague, Pinterest, Amazon, Wilson Sports, BOSE, Medtronic, Google, Honeywell, AXON, Apple, LG, 3M, Kohler and Ping. The program is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.

Required Qualifications:
The successful candidate is required to possess:
• An accredited graduate professional degree in industrial design, or an equivalent graduate professional degree by another name with a focus on object or interface design.
• Demonstrated excellence in teaching industrial design at the university level
• Demonstrated excellence in academic research, or academic creative activity, or professional industrial design practice
• Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion
• Demonstrated supervisory leadership
• A compelling vision for the future of Industrial Design
Desired Qualifications:
• Demonstrated excellence and innovative teaching in both in-person and online formats
• Views and values aligned with our mission to be the most diverse and equitable design and arts school in the nation
• Ability to engage research and/or creative work across disciplines, either within the Institute or across campus or both
• Ability to obtain and attract funding to support their research or creative work
• Experience building and sustaining community partnerships in equitable, ethical, and sustainable ways
• A PhD in industrial design or a related field
• Demonstrated excellence leading industrial design institutions or organizations with strategic initiatives and/or creative activities
• Commitment to exploring the current and future role of industrial design in environmentally and socially responsible design practices;
• Experience commensurate with potential appointment as a sustainability scholar with ASU’s Global Institute of Sustainability.
