The Assistant Hatchery Manager works closely with the Hatchery Manager and Maintenance Manager as part of the team responsible for the supervision and administration of all aspects of the daily operation of the Hatchery. The Assistant Hatchery Manager is the acting Hatchery Manager in the Hatchery Manager’s absence. The Assistant Hatchery Manager is a representative of AKI and is expected to conduct themselves at all times in a manner that will represent the best interests of the corporation. The Assistant Hatchery Manager reports directly to the Hatchery Manager or General Manager in the Hatchery Manager’s absence.
Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to, assisting the Hatchery Manager with all aspects of fish culture, operation of the physical plant systems, supervision and evaluation of personnel, data collection, construction and other projects, harvest operations, preparation of written reports documenting hatchery operations, preparation of annual operating and capital budgets, and other administrative tasks.
Duties (including but not limited):
1) Fish culture: Assist the Hatchery Manager in planning, coordinating, and implementing fish culture activities for broodstock collection and handling, egg collection and fertilization, incubation, rearing, disease prevention and control, quality assessment, marking, and release. Ensure proper techniques are followed and quality standards are met to achieve annual production goals.
2) Operation of the physical plant: Understand and operate the different components of the Hatchery physical plant, including the pipelines, water distribution system, electrical power generation and distribution, domestic water, sewage, garbage, fuel storage and distribution, fire suppression, and alarm system. Also included are the various pieces of equipment and floating stock necessary for the operation of the Hatchery programs. Help to maintain accurate inventory records of all equipment and supplies on-site. Provide input to the Hatchery Manager regarding the condition of equipment and buildings and help to ensure that preventive and routine maintenance is scheduled and performed. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe facility.
3) Supervision of personnel: Supervise all personnel on-site as directed by the Hatchery Manager. Develop and maintain a well-trained staff who are proficient in their duties and be responsible for directing work and schedules, provide leadership, and set a general tone that encourages optimum performance. Provide feedback on employee performance and personnel needs. Provide input on succession planning and be a proactive part of team building.
4) Data collection: Assist in the collection and recording of data on water quality and quantity, environmental observations, returning adult salmon, rearing fish number, growth and performance, physical plant operations, and other data collection as required.
5) Construction projects: Assist the Hatchery Manager and Maintenance Manager in planning, coordinating, and supervising construction, maintenance, and other capital improvement projects as needed.
6) Harvest operations: Assist with broodstock collection and harvest of surplus. Supervise harvest personnel and operations, as directed, in the absence of an AKI harvest supervisor.
7) Preparation of written reports: Assist with the preparation of the monthly hatchery status report, semi-annual hatchery operations and production reports for the Board meetings, the ADF&G Annual Report, and any other official reports required of AKI.
8) Preparation of annual budgets: Assist with the preparation of annual operations and capital budgets to be submitted for presentation to the Board.
9) Administrative duties: Assist with the verification and approval of employee timesheets, procurement of supplies, equipment, and services, ensuring that all AKI purchasing protocols are followed, arranging the logistics for freight and personnel transport as needed, acting as landlord for AKI regarding employee housing and the bunkhouse, and administration of a safety program. Provide input to the Hatchery Manager regarding employee performance for evaluations.
10) Coordination with the Office: Participate in weekly phone meetings with the administration office.
11) Other duties as assigned.
