Design Director – Sheet Metal / Plate Fabrication – Unspecified Company
Location: Islip, New York
We are a design and manufacturing company specializing in sheet metal production and are looking for an experienced manager to lead our design team. Part of your job will be to coordinate with manufacturing to ensure products are made correct and deadlines are met. We are a growing company, and as such, there are growing pains. We need a team leader who can anticipate problems and come up with innovative solutions. We primarily use Solidworks, and as such, an in-depth knowledge of the sheet metal functions paired with a deep material knowledge is required. You will also be responsible for hosting client meetings, overseeing all projects aside from your own, and help junior designers grow into new roles.
You will be responsible for managing, leading, inspiring, and growing the Design team.
Work directly with the Director of Manufacturing to plan and execute production goals.
Provide directional oversight of the Design team’s work and assume overall accountability for it.
Have a clear design point of view and vision for the future, with the courage to pursue forward-thinking design solutions and champion bold and boundary-pushing ideas.
Responsible for maintaining a comprehensive understanding of company strategy.
Work collaboratively with the COO, CDO, and CEO.
Lead project teams to conceptualize, manage, and deliver projects on time and within budget.
Develop pitches and project approaches that lead to exciting, inspiring, and motivating work for our Design team, creating work that sets an example that all designers want to follow.
Maintain and enforce company guidelines (drawing standards, materials, customer relations, and project management SOP’s) across all touchpoints, updating and refining as we continue to grow.
Manage several projects at one time, including continued contribution to individual daily production projects.
Educate and facilitate new processes, workflows, and manufacturing/design techniques.
Actively contribute to a positive and creative atmosphere for the department.
Present creative work with a strong ability to communicate your creative process, thoughts and ideas.
Work on various types of projects, including (but not limited to): daily production and workflow, trade show designs, proprietary designs, and collaborative projects.
Requirements
10+ years professional design experience, preferably related to manufacturing in sheet metal or similar field.
3+ years of management experience, with proven ability to build, mentor, and motivate teams
Excellent Design skills, both aesthetically and functionally.
Strong understanding of sheet metal fabrication and CNC production technologies.
Strategic and thoughtful in their approach to design
Ability to communicate directly to a team working across various content elements simultaneously
Eagerness for innovation and to challenge the status quo
Passion for current design trends in Architecture, furniture, and product design.
Great communication and storytelling skills, both verbal and written
You have managed multiple clients and priorities simultaneously
Be immersed and knowledgeable in design culture, past, and present
Open, positive, and have a collaborative communication style
Deep knowledge of and familiarity with Solidworks, CNC nesting software, Adobe Creative Cloud Products, and Microsoft Office.
Strong project management and organization skills
Familiarity working in Google Slides, Keynote, and Power Point
Working knowledge of sheet metal tooling: Press brake, laser cutter, rolling machine, etc.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree preferred
Proficiency in Solid Works required
Sheet Metal experience required
AutoCAD or Drafting experience preferred
Proficiency in Microsoft Suite required – Excel, Word, Outlook
Manufacturing experience preferred
Team Building and leadership skills a must
Essential Functions
Provide COO with a daily / weekly production schedule outlook.
Metric daily performance with all associate designers. Provide daily completed deliverables.
Maintain departmental workflow to meet the demands of the production department.
Consistently, maintain on time deliverables to both clients and the production team.
Prepare cut lists and drawings for production
Requisition design components
Prepare detailed fabrication drawings to produce accurate sheet metal components
Ongoing engineering improvements to the current product line
Development of new products
Collaborate with Sales, Estimating, and Production
Leadership qualities
8-hour shift, salaried position.
Ability to commute/relocate:
Islip, NY.
