Packing Design Department Manager Responsibilities:
Responsible for managing the structural design department, which consist of graphic and structural designers. The design department fulfills the design requests from the Sales Department, and is responsible for setting up structural specifications for all new items before manufacturing.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Formulate and communicate ideas for new accounts or products, analyzing customer needs and production feasibility.
Accompany Sales Representatives on occasion to present new products or designs to customers or prospects.
Review accounts and make recommendations for update on style, board weight, new developments, etc.
Analyze changes in the industry and research innovations in equipment that can be adapted to company operations.
Responsible for performance of subordinates, including meeting deadlines ,coordinating priority levels of workload, and ensuring ultimate fit and function per customers’ requirements of all designs coming from the department
Maintain documentation standards for all designs and specifications in the designated databases.
Implement, maintain, and support all company policies and procedures, including safety and maintaining good housekeeping.
Management may assign additional duties.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Directly supervises all employees assigned to the department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; conflict resolution; team building; coaching and leading employees to improve; addressing complaints and resolving problems; documentation; and setting an example of superior behavior, attitude and performance.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
College education or heavy college coursework in the field of drafting, design, and engineering.
Five years’ experience in corrugated packaging or related field.
Good communicator with customers and sales staff.
Candidates are PREFERRED who offer the following:
Supervisory experience as a proven manager.
Experience in a production/manufacturing facility, especially in the packaging industry.
Experience designing point of purchase temporary displays
Training in packaging engineering.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
TECHNICAL SKILLS
The individual must have a working knowledge of the following:
Equipment design and capabilities that can be translated into efficient operation. This also supports the supervisor’s role of teacher and trainer for his/her personnel.
Proficient use of ARTIOS CAD both for design and specification documentation purposes, using ARTIOS CAD Metadata.
Cost issues in order to make daily decisions that will reduce overall costs and will help the supervisor find areas that require improvement.
Budget development, adherence and analysis.
Quality standards.
Regulatory requirements including but not limited to wage and hour requirements, environmental and waste minimization, company policies, and personnel requirements including OSHA, DEQ and EEO.

PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENTS
The performance of the Design Manager will be measured as follows:
Operating standards – the Design Manager will need to see that all reporting staff meet or exceed the Operating Standards in the areas of quality, cost, safety, customer satisfaction and productivity. Such standards will be set annually and communicated to the supervisor.
Personal growth – while the company will provide the tools to assist the supervisor to grow professionally the responsibility for moving forward lies with the individual. Each year there will be goals developed and agreed to by the supervisor and his/her superior.
Employee relations – through observations the Design Manager will be evaluated regarding his/her and his/her reporting staff’s skills and advancements in the areas of motivational techniques and results, positive and corrective/constructive feedback, subordinate development and creating a positive work environment.
Creativity – this will be evaluated by how active the Design Manager and his/her direct reports are in participating in advancing the business through new and innovative ideas.
