Book Runners Hiring for Multiple Full Stack Ruby on Rails Software Engineers (3+ yrs experience) at Portland, OR Full Time

At Book Runners (book-runners.com) we’re redefining the sourcing and distribution of college textbooks. We work with the largest college & K-12 textbook distributors in the country, providing educational material to 1,000s of schools across the United States. Our company has grown to be one of the largest wholesale suppliers in the industry during our first 3 years of operation, largely due to our teams’ focus on software development.

Our Ruby on Rails application is at the center of the company’s operations – managing inbound orders, receiving shipments, controlling the movement of books around the warehouse, building multi-pallet outbound shipments, and receiving payments for those shipments.

We’re looking for multiple well rounded full-time full stack software engineers to become core members of our engineering team – self starters who wants an exciting and challenging role building new iterations of our application, with direct impact on the technical evolution of the company and frequent interaction with the founders.

Possible future projects include:

• Improving the architecture and scalability of data imports from diverse sources for ordering, fulfillment, and shipping
• Enhancing warehouse barcode/scanner integration in place of keyboards
• Warehouse automation

The engineering team is located in Portland Oregon and usually operates in-person with flexible days and hours, but is currently operating remotely due to Covid 19.

Required skills:

• Design and implement features to increase purchasing, sales, and warehouse operations effectiveness
• Thrive in a fast paced iterative startup environment
• Interpret and refine non-technical requirements into actionable designs
• Apply software engineering best practices in areas such as agile software development, architecture, quality, performance, maintainability, scalability, and robust UI/UX
• Collaborate and clearly communicate progress or concerns to coworkers and other stakeholders
• Identify opportunities to improve existing features and workflows
• Research and apply new technologies where appropriate
• Troubleshoot and resolve production code or platform issues

Minimum experience:
At least 3 years real world production experience using:

• Ruby/Rails
• Postgres & PL/pgSQL
• Git

Bonus points for:

• Bachelors Degree in Computer Science or similar
• Previous development experience with inventory and warehouse operations
• Handling and analysis of large datasets
• Cloud based infrastructure
• Producing and consuming REST and other APIs
• React, Node and jQuery
