Position Summary

Plan and supervise in conjunction with the Grounds Superintendent, all aspects of grounds maintenance on the University’s 146
acres that are comprised of open spaces distinguished as greens, practice fields, synthetic surfaces, athletic game fields, Meehan ice rink,
open walkways, parking lots, and green roofs. Within this acreage are shrubs, ground cover, annual and perennial plants, trees (over 100
separate species), 50 acres of fine athletic turf and synthetic fields, specialty and historical gardens (including Rochambeau, Nightingale,
the gardens of the President’s house etc.), roads, walkways, and other hardscape surfaces, fences, irrigation systems and outdoor
trash removal. The Assistant Superintendent will assist with managing staff, including all in-house grounds staffing operations as well as
all associated contract services.

Job Qualifications and
Competencies

• Bachelor’s degree in Plant and Soil Science (Agronomy), Environmental Horticultural, Forestry
  or related field.
• Must hold a current Commercial Pesticide Applicators Certificate in Categories 3A or 3B.
• 5-7 years of
  experience (minimum of 3 years managing staff in a union environment preferred)
• Possession of a valid motor vehicle
  operator’s license
• Must maintain required licenses as a condition of employment
• Considerable knowledge of strategic
  budget practices, employee management, and working with vendor contracts and services
• Considerable knowledge of the methods,
  practices, equipment, tools and materials of the trade
• Skill in the installation, repair, programming, and maintenance of computer
  controlled irrigation system.
• Ability to assign, lay out and supervise the work of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance
  workers
• Understand application of mathematics in properly proportioning and applying seed, plant growth regulators, fertilizers and
  other agricultural chemicals.
• Ability to read blueprints, plans, and specifications
• Ability to analyze maintenance,
  repair, and construction data and make recommendations pertaining to safety, quality, and efficiency
• Ability to supervise, train,
  and evaluate the work of others
• Ability to read, interpret, apply, and explain rules, regulations, policies, and procedures
• Ability to complete accurate records, including time and material costs
• Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local
  codes.
• Knowledge of supervisory principles, practices and techniques.

Additional physical demands and
working conditions:

• Physical demands: Regularly required to talk and hear. The employee is required to stand,
  walk, use hands to feel and use hands and arms to reach. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance
  vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. May be required to wear Personal Protective Equipment
  to include steel toed shoes, or non – slippery shoes, eye protection, nitrile and leather gloves.
• Must be able to walk ,
  stand climb stairs for long durations of time during and outside of shifts
• Must be able to work under adverse temperatures and /or
  weather conditions
• Report to work if required on holidays, winter break, nights, weekends, and on call 7 days per week
• During emergency scenarios this position may require hands-on work.
• This position may require additional work hours beyond a
  normal work week schedule based on departmental needs.
