Room OperatorPurpose of the position:This position is responsible for performing a variety of duties pertaining to the safety and security of the officers, inmates, and facilities of the County Court House and Detention Center, including monitoring security cameras for emergencies and reporting situations to the on-duty supervisor. Minimum Education, Training and/or Experience (required at time of hire): High School diploma or equivalent and three (3) years of experience in a criminal justice or emergency services field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Work Schedule:10-hour shifts that adhere to assigned work schedule as outlined in the Department and County attendance policies and procedures. Essential Functions of the position:Monitoring security cameras in the Detention Facility and Court House to identify and address any emergency situations of possible issues that arise and allowing access to the facilities when needed. Responsible for receiving radio and telephone messages, answering public calls and transferring calls to appropriate staff, relaying messages to appropriate staff.
Receives calls and dispatches appropriate personnel in accordance with established proceduresOperates a computer terminal connected to the Jail Management software and communicates the allowable information as appropriate. Responsible for egress and access doors for the facility as requested or necessary. Provides information to public as allowed by policy and state law as requested.
Performs other related duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:Knowledge of local laws, ordinances and the North Carolina General Statutes pertaining to the commitment and confinement of inmates.
Ability to use considerable tact and firmness in obtaining information from distressed persons. Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative in receiving messages, responding to emergency situations, and dispatching calls. Working knowledge of the geographical layout of the Detention Facility and the general work flow of both foot traffic and vehicle traffic in and around the facility.
Working knowledge of the operation of two-way radio equipment and related Federal Communication Commission regulations. Knowledge of practices and procedures involved in inmate management. Some knowledge of the operation and location of law enforcement units.
Skill in the operation of two-way radio equipment. Ability to exercise sound judgment in emergency situations. Ability to speak clearly, distinctly and politely.
Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public. Ability to maintain simple but effective files, records and reports. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
Ability to maintain courteous and tactful relationships with families of inmates, attorneys, ministers and other persons concerned with the welfare of individual inmates. Ability to take prompt and effective action during detention facility emergencies. This position will be posted until filled.
