An East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) Carpenter performs skilled rough and finish carpentry and related work to repair, maintain, remodel, and at times, construct a variety of wooden and concrete structures. This includes both shop and field work.
Duties include:
• Maintenance and repair of all EBMUD facilities such as treatment plants, office buildings, reservoirs, tanks, pumping plants, outlet towers, fences, bridges, pipe and tunnel shoring, stairs, boat docks, floors, roofs, doors and door framing, window and window framing, molding and trim. Installation, fabrication, and repair of a wide variety of wooden, concrete, and metal structures.
• Installing, maintaining and repairing a wide variety of wooden and concrete structures and facilities such as plants and office buildings, reservoirs, tanks, outlet towers, fences, bridges, pipe and tunnel shoring, walkways, boat docks, floors, roofs, doors and door frames, windows and window frames, inside walls, molding and trim.
• Performing custom shop work to fabricate and repair furniture, cabinets, counters, bins and similar articles.
• Laying out and building concrete forms, installing rebar and foundation bolts, and pouring concrete for large or complex structures including underground vaults, pump bases, foundations and retaining walls.
• Reading and interpreting plans and specifications; preparing estimates of labor, materials and supplies; preparing and maintaining records and reports.
• Observing relevant safe work methods and safety precautions, including shoring and scaffolding, fall protection and respirator safety.
• Skillfully and safely using a wide variety of hand and power carpentry tools, welding and cutting equipment, surveying equipment and concrete tools.
• Competent use of PC software and web functions, including, Word, Outlook, smart phone applications and internet searches and purchasing.
The salary range is $8,900 per month increasing to $9,345, $9,812, $10,303 after 12, 24, and 36 months, respectively.

1. A high school diploma or its equivalent; AND either
2a. Attainment of journey-level status as a Carpenter in all-around carpentry work through a recognized apprenticeship program, OR
2b. Four and a half years of shop and field carpentry work experience.
3. Must possess a California driver’s license and have a satisfactory driving record.
4. Must possess the physical characteristics to perform the critical and important duties of the class, including sufficient physical agility to work in confined spaces and to climb ladders to a height of 40 feet; sufficient strength to lift and carry sacks of cement weighing up to 90 lbs.
5. Must be willing to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions and work overtime as needed.
6. May be required to be clean shaven as required in order to wear respiratory protection equipment.

2. Candidates must achieve a passing score on each test part in order to advance to the next step in the selection process.
3. All qualified applications and supplemental responses will be reviewed, with those candidates meeting the minimum qualifications for the position to be invited to a written test (weighted 30%) scheduled for Saturday, October 7th, 2023.
4. Those candidates passing the written test will be invited to a hands-on performance test (weighted 70%) tentatively scheduled for early-November 2023, which may include rough and finish carpentry and concrete forming exercises to further evaluate knowledge, skills and abilities.
5. Successful candidates will be placed on a hiring list, based on rank, for further consideration to fill the current regular vacancy, as well as others occurring over the next 12 to 24 months.
6. The probation period for this position is 12 months. For those holding civil service status the probation period is 6 months.
7. All employment offers are conditional, pending the results of a Live Scan background screening. All selected finalists must participate in the Live Scan background screening process to remain in consideration for EBMUD employment.
