Repairs, modifies, tests and maintains fire fighting apparatuses, fire rescue boats and trailers, fire and rescue equipment in the Honolulu Fire Department, and all heavy vehicles in the Honolulu Police Department; and performs other related duties as required.
There are two vacancies with the Honolulu Fire Department, Administrative Services Bureau, Mechanic Shop. Positions are located at the Waipahu Maintenance Facility. Must be able to climb a 100-foot aerial ladder, work in confined spaces, work in awkward positions, and be exposed to hazard conditions while at a fire, hazmat or rescue scene/location. Must be able to be on standby (subject to be called after hours) and work overtime in emergency situations. May respond to fire calls and operate HFD’s utility vehicle with emergency red lights and siren. List may be used to fill future vacancies in this and/or other departments.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
At time of application, you must be a citizen, national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.
Experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to competently perform the journey level skills and duties of this position.
Such experience must have demonstrated the knowledge of the theory and principles of the internal combustion engine; the principles of electricity as applied to the electrical systems of automotive equipment; theory and principles of high pressure positive displacement and centrifugual pumps; the use of hydraulic oil presses, lathes, gauges, gear or bearing pullers, sanding machines, spray guns, testing equipment and other mechanical implements used in the trade; the occupational hazards and precautionary measures applicable to the trade, and the aility to plan, lay out and set up work; locate and adjust mechanical defects in gasoline and diesel driven automobile equipment; maintain and repair non-automotive equipment such as high pressure rotary and centrifugal pumps, air compressors and lawn mower; make repairs using modern tools, equipment and procedures; do welding and simple body and fender repairs; interpret and work from rough sketches or blueprints as well as from oral and written instructions.
Possession of an appropriate valid driver’s license and a current State Department of Transportation medical examination certificate.
