Performs a variety of chemical or microbiological analyses and investigations in the field and laboratory on wastewater, fresh, estuarine and saline receiving waters, sludge and sediment; prepares reports of data obtained and performs other related duties as required.
Duties may include but are not limited to the following: conducts chemical and microbiological analyses of wastewater and receiving water samples to determine the effectiveness and efficiency of wastewater and cesspool treatment processes; makes field investigations and surveys of industrial wastes discharged into municipal sewers, and on pollution of streams and other natural bodies of water; collects representative samples of water or wastewater for analysis; studies and reports on effect of wastewater gases, fluids and additives on sewer structures, equipment, cesspools, operating personnel and receiving waters; carries out continuing laboratory analyses to correlate findings with observed results of field applications; maintains laboratory apparatus and equipment; prepares reports on analyses and field work; may supervise sub-professional assistants as required.

There are vacancies with the Department of Environmental Services. Depending on position, special work requirements include working with wastewater, noxious odors and gases; heavy lifting; walking along splash zones in shoreline areas; and walking along coral reefs. In addition, required to work modified 5 days/week schedule to cover required weekend sampling and analysis. Also required to work overtime after hours and on holidays as needed to comply with 365 days/year monitoring schedules and EPA sample holding times. Required start time of 6:15 a.m. for fieldwork assignments and 7:00 a.m. for non-fieldwork assignments. List may be used to fill future vacancies in this and/or other departments.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
Equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major work in chemistry or a biological science.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
One year of professional (i.e., post-bachelor’s degree, non-technical/non-clerical) experience in a chemical or microbiological laboratory. Such experience must have demonstrated knowledge of the principles and practices of chemistry and microbiology, especially as they relate to wastewater and water liquid wastes analyses; the methods, techniques and equipment used in laboratory analysis; environmental sanitation; ability to gather, organize, analyze and interpret field and laboratory data; keep records and prepare reports of laboratory and field observations and results of tests.
Substitution: A Master’s degree in chemistry or microbiology may substitute for the required one year of professional experience in a chemical or microbiological laboratory.

LICENSE REQUIREMENT:
