Overview:
The Network Administrator position for the Boston Fire Department (BFD) will provide network and infrastructure support for the organization. This position will support a variety of technologies; the applicant must possess a comprehensive knowledge of networking, infrastructure, telecommunications and connectivity in a Microsoft environment. The person will be located at BFD’s headquarters in Boston and will report to the Chief Technology Officer. The BFD network is part of the city’s network; the Network Administrator will interact with the city of Boston’s IT department (DoIT) for issue resolution and improvements. Must be detail oriented, analytical and have the ability to solve problems. Maintain a flexible attitude towards work assignments and changing priorities. The right candidate will have the ability to work within a team environment as well as independently.
Responsibilities:
The Network Administrator responsibilities include but not limited to,
- Providing technical and administrative support for BFD’s network, connectivity, infrastructure, cabling and network applications.
- Offer courteous and professional support to the users and DoIT personnel. Respond to calls, emails and requests for IT and network support and assistance.
- Diagnose networking, connectivity, infrastructure and related hardware issues.
- Monitor, resolve and document issues in a timely manner.
- Perform administrative support for different versions of Windows Server, Active Directory and other networking software.
- Assist in the maintenance and security of the BFD and DoIT networks.
- Participate in the selection and oversee implementation of networking hardware, software and technologies.
- Monitor network performance and develop metrics.
- Contribute to direction and future growth of BFD’s network and infrastructure.
- Provide support for computer and general IT issues.
- Support Windows operating systems and ancillary systems needed to sustain our software platform, network and connectivity.
- Expand remote use by introducing connectivity tools and software.
- Interact with users to determine requirements and implement the appropriate technology.
- Supervise and work with BFD’s outside network consultants.
- Complete daily responsibilities while managing user requests and small projects.
Minimum Entrance Qualifications:
- Minimum 8 years’ experience.
- Bachelor’s degree with a Technical discipline preferred.
- Excellent knowledge of networking and connectivity.
- Proven network experience in a Windows Server environment; Certification a plus.
- Good communications and customer service skills Possess the ability to analysis and resolve problems.
- Ability to complete tasks/projects in a timely manner Perform other tasks when needed.
Drug Test Required.
Boston Residency Required.
