The Fire Protection Engineer Assistant works with engineering, architectural, construction community, and other citizens through review and analysis of design documents through enforcement, interpretation, and application of fire codes, building codes, state regulations, special use permit requirements, and other City ordinances. This position works closely with the fire department personnel and other customers to ensure compliance of Fire and Life Safety Systems and standards.
Essential Functions
Works with engineering, architectural, construction community, and other citizens through review and analysis of design documents through enforcement, interpretation, and application of fire codes, building codes, state regulations, special use permit requirements, and other City ordinances.
Works closely with the fire department personnel and other customers to ensure compliance of Fire and Life Safety Systems and standards.
Evaluates the integration of life safety, fire protection, pre-engineered systems, and equipment given a plan submittal, a life safety report, a sequence of operations report, and testing criteria, so that the integration of proposed systems meets the requirements or intent of the applicable fire codes.
Identifies, documents, and reports any deficiencies.
Reviews and examines building plans, fire protection system plans, hazardous materials and flammable liquids plans and specifications for compliance with applicable fire codes and standards.
Any other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION:
Bachelor’s degree in fire protection engineering or related field.
LICENSE(S) and/or CERTIFICATION(S):
Professional Engineer License. (Professional Engineers with license/registration from other states must obtain the Texas license within six (6) months after appointment.)
Must obtain International Code Council Fire Plans Examiner certification within 12 months of appointment.
Some positions require a valid driver’s license with good driving record.
OTHER REQUIREMENT(S):
Some positions may be subject to field-work and inclement weather conditions.
PREFERENCE(S):
Fire Protection Engineering design and/or review experience a plus.
International Code Council Fire Code Official certification
International Code Council Building Code Official Professional certification
Supplemental Information
1. Ability to review all plans for commercial and residential buildings and development, fire sprinkler systems, standpipes, fire detection/alarm systems, fixed fire suppression systems, underground and aboveground storage tank and line installations, tank farms, LP-gas installations, CNG and LNG installations, energy storage systems, hydrogen fueling station installations, motor-vehicle fueling stations and water main/hydrant engineering drawings for compliance with City ordinances, International Fire and Building Code, International Fire and Building Code Standards, NFPA Standards and other State and nationally recognized standards.
2. Knowledge of hazardous materials compliance regulations, systems, analysis, HMIS, HMMP and processes.
3. Ability to prepare written correspondence concerning plan review requirements, analyze responses for code compliance and authorize release of permits.
4. Ability to communicate effectively with other City departments, developers, architects, engineers, contractors.
5. Ability to coordinate plan review, construction and Certificate of Occupancy activities.
6. Ability to witness acceptance tests of fire sprinkler systems, fire alarm systems, underground and aboveground storage tanks as well as other fire protection systems and assist fire and building inspectors.
7. Ability to perform related duties such as public education, career awareness programs, providing technical assistance to Fire Department personnel.
8. Ability to manage large amounts of detailed data and compile accurately into reports.
9. Computer skills in a Microsoft Windows environment, must include Excel.
10. Knowledge of municipal and state fire code enforcement practices and procedures.
11. Knowledge pertaining to requirements for the installation and maintenance of fire protection systems including fire pumps, fire detection, smoke control, fire suppression and fire sprinklers.
12. Knowledge of life safety systems, fire protection features, and means of egress, and building classification.
The salary listed on this job posting is the starting salary range; amount offered will depend upon qualifications.
For evaluation purposes, acceptable qualifying experience for all positions must have been in a paid capacity unless noted otherwise in the minimum qualifications for the posted position.
Additionally, 30+ hours per week will be counted as full-time employment and will receive full credit for the amount of time employed. A minimum of 15 through 29 work hours per week will be counted as part-time employment and will receive half credit for the amount of time employed.
