DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Troubleshoots maintains, manages, and upgrades existing electrical, electromechanical, and electronic installations and systems. Researches and analyzes causes of failures. Repairs, replaces, and installs new equipment/components and related hardware to maximize functionality. Provides preventive maintenance ensuring safe, clean, and efficient operating conditions. Prepares and updates various records, logs, and reports. Responds to emergency calls for various types of component failures and shutdowns. Organizes, schedules, and monitors work assignments. Inspects field locations to determine appropriate types and placement of electrical components for installation.
WORKING CONDITIONS
There are routine exposures to significant levels of heat, cold, moisture and air pollution. The position may involve periodic exposure to chemical substances and physical trauma of a minor nature such as cuts, bruises and minor burns. This position involves considerable physical exertion, such as regular climbing of ladders, lifting of heavy objects (up to 80 pounds) on a frequent basis and/or assuming awkward positions for long periods of time.
This is a Houston Public Works Emergency Management position at the Tier I Level.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires a High School diploma or a GED certificate. Requires successful completion of an apprentice electrician program approved by the Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training or the equivalent as recognized by the Electrical Safety and Licensing Advisory Board.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
No journey-level experience is required
LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
A valid State of Texas Journeyman Electrician License is required.
Must have a valid Texas driver’s license and comply with the City of Houston’s policy on driving. May require a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
PREFERENCES
Preference will be given to applicants with journeyman experience, who are able to work alone and perform electrical work alone. Candidates with demonstrated experience in traffic signal repair, maintenance, and/or construction will be given preference.
**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.**
