DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The City of Houston Human Resources Department seeks to fill various Human Resources positions. The successful candidates should be independently self-sufficient, customer-focused, and technologically savvy. The candidate(s) selected for this position will work collaboratively within the Human Resources Operations, Shared Services and Employee Relations sections, supporting the Client Relations division as a business partner and point-of-contact to provide superior human resources services.
Shared Services teams are responsible for the effective processing of personnel actions that result from employment status changes such as promotions, transfers, terminations, salary increases and leaves of absence. Other services provided by Shared Services teams include the requisitioning of temporary employees and administering Family Medical Leave.
Shared services teams work collaboratively with their client(s) to provide a high level of communication and a well-regimented partnership.
The Human Resources Generalist duties includes but are not limited to:
Employee Relations section of General Relations ensures all employee relations activities are compliant with applicable city policies/procedures, Code of Ordinances, federal, state and local laws and regulations. It is also the city’s agent for sustaining effective employment relationships in the workplace.

WORKING CONDITIONS
This position is physically comfortable; the individual has discretion about walking, standing, etc. There are no major sources of discomfort in a normal office environment.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Social Science, Liberal Arts or a related field.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
One year of related professional experience in human resources is required. Pertinent experience at the professional level may be substituted for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.
LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
None
Preference will be given to applicants with strong ability to multi task in a fast-paced environment. Must be well organized and detail-oriented. Strong knowledge of SAP, MS Office Word and Excel. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills. Ability to establish excellent working relationships with people from diverse backgrounds and at all organizational levels.
**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.**

Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate’s qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification.
