Maintenance Worker

Separate Promotional and Open (external) Eligibility Lists will be established.
The Promotional Eligibility List will be comprised of current City employees (full or part-time) who meet the minimum qualifications and successfully complete any required selection processes.
The Open Eligibility List will consist of external applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and successfully complete any required selection processes.
The hiring department will consider the Promotional Eligibility List prior to considering candidates on the Open Eligibility List.
The City of Ontario’s Parks and Maintenance Department has an excellent opportunity for an individual interested in serving the community by playing a key role on the team assigned to maintaining and repairing park grounds and their related structures, parkways, and medians. Maintenance Worker is an entry level position responsible for public grounds maintenance; sidewalk, curb, and gutter repair; debris removal; and other maintenance functions as needed.
The ideal candidate will have the ability to operate and maintain a variety of power equipment and hand tools; operate light and medium-duty equipment; and perform other related work as necessary. Additionally, the successful candidate will be a role model for the City’s Approach to Public Service and exhibit the qualities of a “Five Tool Player” – Leader, Thinker, Communicator, Operator and Public Servant.
The Maintenance Worker classification is a common classification used in a variety of City departments. This recruitment will result in an eligibility list for this classification to meet the future staffing needs of the departments with openings in this classification. Current vacancies exist in the Parks and Maintenance Division. This is a broad classification which may require employees to move to a different assignment consistent with their skills based on the needs of the department.
The Parks and Maintenance Department
The Parks and Maintenance Department is committed to creating and strengthening community value by enhancing the quality of life in the City of Ontario through our professional services, maintaining and preserving parkland, public facilities, and City infrastructure. This includes the maintenance service programs and operations to the City park system, public grounds, roadway maintenance, storm drains, street sweeping, sidewalks and public right-of-way, tree trimming, graffiti abatement, traffic signs, street painting and striping, debris removal, and contract maintenance services.
Within these program areas, the department provides services for non-structural overlays and pothole repair, landscape and irrigation maintenance, street striping and sign repairs, concrete repair and maintenance of sidewalk/curb/gutter, street sweeping and debris removal, and graffiti abatement.

Examples of Essential Functions
The essential functions typically performed by the Maintenance Worker assigned to Park Maintenance include the following:
Performs manual labor related to the repair and maintenance of sidewalks, curbs, gutters and other related concrete work.
Patches potholes, assists with root removal and raises manholes.
Assists in the fabrication, installation, and maintenance of traffic signs.
Assists in painting roadway striping using pressurized painting equipment.
Operates all Class C equipment to transport materials, equipment, tools, work crews and loads trucks.
Replaces sprinklers, irrigates trees, plants shrubs, grass and landscaped areas.
Cleans, paints and maintains restrooms.
Inspects playground equipment and adjoining areas for broken glass, dangerous objects and other safety hazards.
Completes daily and monthly inspection records.
May use an aerial lift to work at varying heights.
May perform emergency maintenance work.
Qualification Guidelines
Education
High school diploma or recognized equivalent.
Experience
One year of park ground maintenance or street maintenance work.
Licenses
A valid California Class C driver’s license and an acceptable driving record at the time of appointment and throughout employment.
Knowledge of:
Proper and efficient use of hand and power tools and equipment.
Techniques and materials used in the maintenance and repair of streets, gutters, sidewalks and related work.
Work safety rules and procedures.
Pesticide application and gardening methods for the care of trees, shrubs, plants, flowers, grass and other landscaped areas.
Proper placement of safety barricades and cones.
