Senior Combination Inspector positions plan, assign and supervise the work of Combination Inspectors who inspect residential and other structures for compliance with storm water regulations, California Health and Safety Codes, and provisions of the California Model Codes and San Diego Municipal Code; investigate and resolve inspection issues; provide technical information to builders, contractors, engineers, designers, and the public; prepare reports and memorandums; utilize computer software for training and scheduling purposes; train and evaluate the work performance of subordinates; develop policies and procedures; and perform other duties as assigned.
NOTES:
The following wage increase is scheduled to take effect for Senior Combination Inspector: 5% effective 1/1/23.
Employees in job classifications represented by Municipal Employees Association (MEA) are scheduled to receive a 5% general wage increase effective 7/1/22.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
You must meet the following requirements on the date you apply, unless otherwise indicated.
EXPERIENCE: You must meet ONE of the following options:
One year of full-time journey-level experience as a Combination Inspector II with the City of San Diego.
One year of full-time journey-level experience with a public agency or a private company contracting with a governmental jurisdiction at a level equivalent to a Combination Inspector II with the City of San Diego (a position that performs skilled inspection work as a generalist in all fields of building inspection to include electrical, mechanical, plumbing, residential fire sprinkler systems, structural and storm water inspection; inspects one and two-family residential structures, including mobile homes for compliance with applicable City and State Model Building Codes and regulations; investigates complaints of building code violations; reviews construction, repair, replacement, installation and repair plans; and inspects sites for practicability of plans).
NOTE:
City of San Diego employees using Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA) experience to qualify must submit written documentation signed by their appointing authority or payroll specialist, detailing the work performed, dates, and total number of qualifying OCA hours. OCA experience without the required documentation will NOT be considered.
CERTIFICATE: A valid International Code Council (ICC) Residential Combination Inspector Certificate will be required within one year from date of hire.
LICENSE: A valid California Class C Driver License is required at the time of hire.
HIGHLY DESIRABLE:
Supervisory experience in the construction industry.
A valid ICC Electrical Inspector Certificate.
A valid ICC Plumbing Inspector Certificate.
A valid ICC Mechanical Inspector Certificate.
A valid ICC Building Inspector Certificate.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS: Employment offers are conditional pending the results of all screening processes that are applicable to this position, which may include the following: confirmation of citizenship or legal right to work in the United States; completion of a pre-employment medical review and exam (which may include drug and alcohol testing); reference checks; confirmation of full COVID-19 vaccination; and fingerprinting. Fingerprints will be submitted to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the California Department of Justice for a conviction record report.
