JOB SUMMARY
The Maintenance Technician is responsible for the operation of a variety of construction and maintenance equipment and for performing manual labor activities as needed and/or required by the Public Works Department. Although right-of-way maintenance is the most common type of work performed, laborers in this position class also work in park maintenance, facility maintenance and in other related areas.
A. ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Roads and Right-of-Ways
a. Roads:
i. Pothole patching
ii. Small road repairs
iii. Street sweeping
iv. Street closings
b. Right-of-Ways
i. Shoulder grass mowing and trimming
ii. Controlling right-of-way erosion
iii. Laying drainage pipes
iv. Weed spraying
v. Right-of-Way tree trimming
vi. Removing debris from ROW
vii. Street signage
viii. Litter removal
2. Storm Water Management
a. Storm pipe inspection, maintenance, and repairs
b. Catch basin repairs
c. Clean/Maintain ditches & swales
3. Public Facilities
a. Construction & maintenance of parks, playgrounds, and other City facilities
B. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
a. Verbal skills to communicate information to employees, Mayor, and the public.
b. Writing skills to prepare reports, policies, procedures, and articles.
c. Reading skills to understand policies, manuals and information pertaining to city government.
d. Knowledge of departmental and city rules, regulations, policies and procedures and State municipal law.
e. Ability to deal with public in a pleasant and effective manner.
f. Knowledge of personnel practices, laws, and guidelines.
g. For Maintenance Tech I, a minimum of 1 year of maintenance experience is required.
h. For Maintenance Tech II, 2-4 years of maintenance experience is required.
i. For Maintenance Tech III, 5+ years of maintenance experience is required.
C. OTHER CHARACTERISTICS
a. Possess a valid driver’s license; ability to secure a CDL.
b. Will to work overtime or other non-standard hours when scheduled and agreed upon.
c. Thoroughness in all phases of duties performed in order to utilize the most efficient organizational skills.
d. Highly motivated individual who has ability to “multi-task” comfortably, work independently & efficiently, and maintains calm disposition.
e. Willingness to occasionally, within reason, and when scheduled – work extra hours, weekends, etc.
f. In the case of an emergency, will be available as required.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment is typically outdoors but can sometimes be in such places as warehouses, City facilities, and City vehicles.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Work can be sedentary to physically demanding. Incumbent must be able to walk over rugged terrain, lift to 60 pounds, stand for long periods of time and be in physically fit condition. Incumbent must be able to work in extreme weather such as heat, cold, rain, and other inclement weather.
