JOB SUMMARY
This position provides assistance for library operations, programs, and services.
MAJOR DUTIES
Assists with the operation of the circulation desk; checks materials in and out; answers reference questions; maintains petty cash and receipts; registers new patrons; assists patrons in the use of computers and other library equipment; answers phones and provides information and assistance.
Operates PINES software system to enter and retrieve information.
Checks computer out to patrons.
Notarizes documents.
Sanitizes books and surfaces.
Sends and receives faxes.
Makes copies and scans items.
Shelves books.
Reads stacks and straightens shelves.
Opens and closes facility.
Checks in courier items.
Assists patrons in locating materials.
Performs all other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
Knowledge of public library policies, procedures, programs, and services.
Knowledge of patron services principles.
Knowledge of library computers and software systems.
Skill in the use and maintenance of computer automated library catalog and circulation systems.
Skill in oral and written communication.
Skill in the operation of computers and general office machines.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Library Director assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include patron confidentiality standards and city and library policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
The work consists of related administrative and patron service duties. The unique needs of each patron contribute to the complexity of the position.
The purpose of this position is to assist with library operations, programs, and services. Success in this position contributes to the efficient and effective delivery of library services to the general public.
CONTACTS
Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city personnel, patrons, couriers, and representatives from other libraries or library systems.
Contacts are typically to provide services, to give or exchange information, or to resolve problems.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending, or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light and occasionally heavy objects.
The work is typically performed in library.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
None.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or equivalent required; and
Less than one year of related experience required; or
Any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the work.
