Several levels of responsibility create the structure of the Combination Inspector Series for the Community Development Department. Growth opportunities are as follow:
Combination Inspector II: $5,353.74 – $6,872.46/mo
Senior Combination Inspector: $5,575.86 – $7,158.18/mo
Supervising Combination Inspector: $6,459.16 – $8,293.48/mo
The City of Stockton is seeking to fill a vacancy for a Combination Inspector I in the Community Development Department. Under general supervision, incumbents perform skilled building and related health and safety inspection work in the interpretation and enforcement of structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, zoning, and related codes and regulations, pertaining to new and existing building construction, remodeling, repair and use; performs related work as assigned. The incumbent will work a City of Stockton 9/80 schedule: 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays; 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Fridays, with alternating Fridays off.
Prior to appointment, eligible candidates will be required to submit to and successfully pass a background investigation, which will include fingerprinting and a medical examination which includes a back evaluation.
Veteran’s Preference:
This position is eligible to receive five (5) Veteran’s Preference Points for entrance into the Civil Service. Veteran’s Preference will not be granted on the promotional list. If you believe you qualify for Veteran’s Preference, a DD-214 Member 4 copy indicating at least 181 consecutive days of service must be received in the Human Resources Department by the final filing deadline. CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
Combination Inspector I is the entry-level class in the series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents perform inspections in specialty craft areas, such as building and related mechanical, electrical or plumbing. Inspections are more routine in nature. Incumbents learn City policies, procedures, specific techniques and methods for combination building inspection, and how to perform combination inspections on single-family dwellings, multifamily dwellings, and minor commercial projects. As experience is gained, duties become more diversified and are performed under more general supervision.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Experience
Combination Inspector I:
Possession of a high school diploma or GED and two (2) years of experience as a journey-level craft worker in the building trades, or two (2) years of experience in enforcing various building construction codes and ordinances. College level coursework in pre-engineering or construction technology is desirable.
Other Requirements:
Must possess a valid California Class C driver’s license.
Must obtain and maintain certification from the International Code Council (ICC) in one or more specialties such as building, electrical, plumbing, or mechanical, within two years of appointment as a condition of continued employment as a Combination Inspector I. Possession of an ICC certification in residential structures is desirable.
The Examination:
Applicants who qualify in terms of relevant work experience and education, that best meet the needs of the City, will be invited to participate in the examination process, which may include a written and/or practical examination weighted at 100%. However, the City reserves the right to utilize alternative testing methods if deemed necessary. Candidates must receive a minimum passing score of 70%, as determined by the relative performance of all candidates in all portions of the examination. In the event or identical ratings, candidates’ names will be arranged in order of application date/time, and, if the same, then arranged alphabetically.
