This is skilled work at the journey level in the painting of buildings, fixtures, signs, pumps, mechanical equipment and electrical apparatus. Duties include preparing surfaces by pressure washing, sanding, needle gun and scraping surfaces. Other duties include preparing paints for application to various surfaces by brush, roll, spray and other painting equipment.
Essential Duties
Perform skilled painting of buildings, fixtures, signs and equipment to assure protection from corrosion and deterioration.
Prepare a variety of surfaces such as metal, wood, concrete, glass and plaster for surface coverings; mix and thin paints, resins and stains.
Apply a variety of paints, furniture stains and other protective finishes to interior and exterior surfaces, equipment, pipes and other structures.
Prepare and paint steel towers, transformers, switches, girders and electrical substation equipment.
Repair and maintain sheet rock and drywall, plaster, concrete and window glazing; tape and texture sheet rock and drywall.
Erect scaffolding and lifts; layout and paint lines for parking lots; prepare and paint various signs.
Contact various departments, outside vendors and others to provide and receive information regarding paint and supplies procurement, vehicle repair and maintenance and painting tasks.
Operate a variety of paint equipment and tools such as sand blasting equipment, brushes, conventional and hydra-spray, paint sprayers, manual rollers, air compressors, pressure washers and putty knives; operate a City vehicle.
Clean and maintain brushes, tools and other equipment.
Perform other skilled maintenance work as needed such as laying tiles and changing windows.
Perform related duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Work includes indoor and outdoor environment;
Position requires climbing and working on ladders and scaffolding.
Employees in this position may be subject to potentially hazardous materials.
Lifting and carrying paint containers and equipment into and out of vehicles to the job location.
Work sites may involve high places or locations near electrically energized equipment and mechanical moving parts.
Painters may be required to handle hazardous materials.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from high school or equivalent;
Completion of a recognized painter apprenticeship program;
One year of post apprenticeship experience as a journey-level painter including industrial painting experience
LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Valid Washington State driver’s license.
Positions assigned to the Tacoma Police Department may require additional background checks which may include fingerprinting and/or a polygraph test.

SELECTION PROCESS & SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:

Examination Process:
This is a competitive selection process. Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will have their responses to the Supplemental Questions #7-14 reviewed and scored by a committee of subject matter experts, as the Experience and Training Test. It is the responsibility of the applicants to adequately describe all pertinent experience and training. Please make sure you read the questions and provide complete informative answers. .
Candidates who pass the test will be placed on an Eligible List for potential interview and hiring consideration.
