Summary:

This ¾-time position performs a variety of customer service functions in support of the Recreation and Parks Department at the Recreation Pavilion. These functions include answering customer inquiries by telephone and/or person, registering participants for classes/programs, collecting admissions fees, financial deposits, filing, copying, maintaining program information, scheduling facilities for private and public use, and providing food and beverage service at the espresso cart.

 

Daytime, evening and/or weekend availability required.

• Greet customers utilizing effective/professional customer service skills.
• Answer telephones. Assist customers with requests. Direct calls and messages to personnel.
• Prepare daily financial deposits and prepares credits according to Finance Department guidelines and approval.
• Collect admissions, registration, and program fees utilizing cash register and computer.
• Update monthly activity calendar and program schedules.
• Keep customer service areas, including lobby, clean and stocked with program information and materials.
• Reserve facilities for programs and activities. This may involve setting up and cleaning up after events.
• Utilize computer and other office equipment for producing promotional posters, announcements, and flyers.
• Maintain inventory of sale items.
• Distribute mail and other correspondence to personnel.
• Attend staff meeting and training sessions.
• Provide Espresso service, track food and beverage inventory, refill vending machines, order, clean, and stock espresso cart.
• Assist in indoor playground programs by cleaning, organizing, and decorating playground area.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education, Training and Experience Guidelines

• • High school graduate or GED preferred.
  • Office and customer service experience preferred.
  • Prefer a valid Washington State driver’s license (or be able to attain at time of appointment) and a driving record acceptable to the City’s insurance carrier.
  • Verification of identity and United States work authorization must be complete as required by the Immigration Reform and Control Act.

Special Requirements:

• • Must obtain Food Handler’s permit with first two weeks of employment.
  • CPR and First Aid certification required within six months of employment.
  • Must be able to successfully pass extensive background check.

 

Knowledge of:

• • Office equipment, including cash register and computers.

 

Ability to:

• • Must be available to work irregular hours, according to program and seasonal demands, including evening and weekends. Additional times may be required for meetings and/or emergencies.
  • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing, in person and via telephone, and across distances in a noisy recreation center.
  • Use Microsoft “Windows” word processing, email, internet, spreadsheet and other programs to produce letters and reports.
  • Sit or stand for extended periods, walk, reach with hands and arms overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb or crawl, ascend/descend ladders and inclines, reach, bend at the waist, push/pull grip, twist, lift, throw materials or otherwise positioning oneself to accomplish tasks.
  • Read typed and handwritten notes.
  • Follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Set-up equipment for program and facility use, including ability to lift and move equipment up to 50 lbs.
  • Observe recreation materials, activities, programs, events and assist customers.
  • Establish and maintain a cooperative working relationship in a team environment with other employees, supervisors and customers.
  • Be aware of and adjust to changing surroundings, including a noisy lobby environment, and wet/slick surfaces.

  • Obtain (and maintain) Food Handler’s permit, CPR and First Aid certification, and to operate espresso machine and other food-making machines.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

Majority of work is conducted in a busy office environment-requiring sitting, standing, stooping and lifting up to 50 pounds.

 

The environment is sometimes stressful, working under tight deadlines, with distractions and interruptions, and requires the ability to shift priorities rapidly.

 

Moderate exposure to swimming pool chemicals (such as chlorine).

 

May work irregular hours, according to program and seasonal demands, including evening and weekends. Additional times may be required for meetings and/or emergencies.

Some equipment and/or table set-up necessary for programs and facility use.

 

Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, color differentiation, and the ability to adjust focus.

 

Supervision Received:

Receives direct supervision from the Support Services Supervisor, Support Services Coordinator and Clerk II’s, indirect supervision by the Recreation Director.
