Summary / Objective
Communications Officer I is responsible for handling the communications operations of the Police Department; duties include receiving calls from the public for emergency and non-emergency assistance and dispatching police units in accordance with procedures. Ensures working order of dispatch equipment. This position requires moderate decision making with some review and guidance.
Essential Functions / Responsibilities
•Receives all incoming 9-1-1 emergency calls, non-emergency dispatch calls, and calls on the police administrative lines using proper techniques and procedures.
•Retrieves pertinent information from each emergency and non-emergency call. Accurately communicates pertinent information to the officer in the field by radio, using equipment, codes, and procedures properly to ensure clear, concise, and efficient transmission in the dispatching of a responding officer.
•Conducts record checks including but not limited to criminal and driving, on individuals, vehicles, licenses, and weapons using various computer databases including but not limited to CAD, NCIC and REJIS. Advises officers of hit responses and sends message to entering agency to validate hit. Keeps local and state agencies appraised of record checks completed.
•Responsible for accurately completing, updating and maintaining department paperwork and forms including but not limited to the NCIC database, address database and department employee contact information.
•Responsible for recording and monitoring activity of field units and retrieval and accurate relaying of information contained in various computerized databases to police officers in the field.
•Monitors and relays pertinent information from other public safety agencies in the surrounding areas.
•Enters lost or stolen license plates, stolen property and vehicles, missing persons and other pertinent information into REJIS and NCIC.
•Responsible for cancellation and processing of warrants for the Leawood Municipal Court.
•Ensures all dispatch equipment is in proper operating condition. Notifies supervisor of inoperable or unsafe equipment.
•Reviews and trains to maintain current levels of operations knowledge, stays abreast of continuous system changes, enhances knowledge and learning new skills in relation to public safety and communications.
•Employee may be asked by the supervisor to perform other duties that are not listed but are essential to the job.

Minimum Qualifications / Requirements –

•Ability to learn standard office procedures, systems, and practices including the use of a computer.
•Ability to comprehend and transcribe accurately phone and radio traffic into the Computer Aided Dispatch system.
Education, Training, and Certification Requirements –
•Must have high school diploma or equivalent.
•Must have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs.
•Previous experience in a Communications Officer or Dispatch position preferred.
•Must be or be able to become NCIC certified within six (6) months of hire.
•Must complete the Basic Telecomunicator course through Mid-America Regional Council within six (6) months of hire.
•Completion of NIMS requirement within one year of hire.
•Must possess a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record per the City’s drivers Use of Vehicles for City Business policy throughout employment with the City.
