Job Summary: Responsible for compiling itemized hospital bills, verifying patient insurance coverage and computing patient insurance benefits. Works closely with the Social Service, Medical Records, Physical Therapy and physicians’ office staff. Participates in performance improvement and CQI activities.

Verifies hospital insurance information.
Compiles hospital bills, completes appropriate forms, submits claims to proper agencies/insurance companies.
Contacts insurance companies to collect unpaid insurance claims.
Stays informed about changes in Medicare and Medicaid.
Processes and posts Medicare and Medicaid remits both electronically and manually.
Works all denials for Medicare and Medicaid.
Files and works denials on secondary claims from Medicare and Medicaid.
Helps the manager with the billing process.
Helps posts all other remits if that person is out.
Maintains current patient accounts and addresses in the computer system to avoid loss of claims. Always verifies patient account number.
Types and mails all correspondence in a timely manner.
Answers the telephone in a polite manner. Communicates information to the appropriate staff.
Demonstrates the ability to be flexible, organized and function well in stressful situations.
Interacts with patients/families in a professional manner. Provides explanations regarding statements, insurance coverage.
Treats patients/families with respect; ensures confidentiality of patient records.
Maintains a good working relationship within the department and with other departments.
Maintains a professional working relationship with insurance companies. Process and post daily payments.
Substitute as a phone operator in the front office.
Professional Requirements
High school diploma or equivalent.
Must be able to read, write, and follow written/verbal instructions.
Skills:
Thorough understanding of Medicare, Medicaid, HMO’s, PPO’s, private insurance companies, and Rural Health Clinics.
Basic computer knowledge, data entry skills.
