In print and online, The New Yorker stands apart for its commitment to truth and accuracy, for the quality of its prose, and its insistence on exciting and moving every reader.Job DescriptionThe Newsletter Editor is responsible for curating, writing, and editing The New Yorker’s flagship daily newsletter. The Editor will work closely with others on the newsletter team to produce a daily newsletter that showcases the breadth of The New Yorker, as well as helping to manage the creation and curation of other newsletters in our suite. As such, the Editor must possess excellent writing, editing, curatorial, and digital production skills; a passion for emerging forms of digital journalism; a command of The New Yorker’s style and sensibility; and a deep interest in the stories and topics regularly covered by The New Yorker.Responsibilities:* Manage the day-to-day operations of The New Yorker’s daily newsletter, which involves editorial planning, communication with stakeholders, writing, editing, production, deployment, and monitoring engagement.* Read and digest everything that the magazine publishes each day, with an eye toward synthesizing content for the needs of the newsletter.* Work closely with editorial staff to understand evolving editorial priorities and to insure that the daily newsletter responds in real time to developing stories.* Conceptualize, solicit, and edit contributions to the daily newsletter and other newsletters from staff writers and editors.* Fact-check and copy edit newsletter content as needed.* Collaborate with a cross-functional team, including audience development, e-mail strategy, consumer marketing, and product, on various projects related to the evolution and refinement of newsletter strategy.* Identify opportunities to refine, improve, and broaden the reach of our newsletters.* Help curate, edit, and produce other New Yorker newsletters.* Fully execute the newsletter’s production and deployment and perform other project- and content-management tasks relevant to the team.* Additional duties as required, or as assigned by manager.Skills and Qualifications:* Five to seven years in a journalism role, including experience with e-mail newsletters.* A deep understanding of the media landscape and a strong news sense.* Ability to write, edit, and curate in a quick-churn environment, meeting daily deadlines, and reacting to the demands of the news cycle.* A demonstrated ability to write engaging copy across a range of topics.* Fact-checking and/or copy editing experience strongly preferred.* Excellent communication skills and experience working collaboratively with a variety of stakeholders.* Knowledge of newsletter best practices, both established and emerging.* Strong familiarity with analytics and comfort using data to inform decision-making.* Familiarity with basic HTML and the Adobe Creative Suite, including InDesign, Photoshop, and InCopy.* Meticulous attention to detail.* Ambitious, proactive, and a quick learner.* A strong knowledge of and interest in the style and voice of The New Yorker.* Willingness to work some early mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays.What happens next?If you are interested in this opportunity, please apply below, and we will review your application as soon as possible.
