Position Summary
Constellation’s R&D department conducts research supporting the company’s viticulture, winemaking, and distilling operations. The Research Enologist will manage the daily operations at the newly renovated research winery in Lodi, California. Reporting to the Director of R&D, the Research Enologist will collect field data from vineyards, harvest grapes, and facilitate winemaking operations at all phases of production. As needed, the Research Enologist will travel to other facilities to conduct research, collect samples, facilitate tastings, and interact with winemaking teams.
This Research Enologist will engage in a broad array of activities. The position requires a fair degree of physicality. The Research Enologist is also required to drive long distances. Daily activities include executing unique research protocols, winemaking operations, tracking inventories, material handling, cleaning, sampling, and setting up wine tastings. The Research Enologist will supervise seasonal workers that will assist him/her to execute research operations.
The Research Enologist will learn to integrate research and winemaking principles to execute their duties. This person will be part of the larger Constellation winemaking team. He/She will participate in tasting and contribute to the overall goals of R&D Department.ResponsibilitiesManage day-to-day operations in the research winery.Follow research protocols, execute field operations, and make wine.Conduct cellar operations in research winery (i.e. racking, sampling, filtering, bottling).Collect, track, and transcribe research data (MS Excel).Update spreadsheets with laboratory data.Participate in research experiments at all phases.Participate in managing research winery (pilot plant) and all R&D resources.Set up weekly tastings, pull samples for lab and tastings with other team members.Collaborate with team members across sites.Participate in tastings. Provide feedback on products.Speak up, ask questions, challenge ideas. – Engage intellectually with projects & objectives.Be committed to learning and continuous improvement.Maintains vehicle logs, SDS, track wine inventories for R&D.Oversee sanitation and overall cleanliness of research winery.Maintain R&D equipment.Conduct (small scale) warehouse duties including material handling and tracking.Drive safely. Keep a clean driving record. Secure and haul loads on large pickup truck, occasionally drive with trailer.Adhere to compliance policies, rules, and regulations.Work towards STZ2030 vision. Be inclusive, thoughtful, and open.Be attuned to safety. Follow safety protocols. Be vigilant of unsafe conditions or behaviors. Be a vocal advocate to ensure self and team members are safe, healthy, and unharmed.Minimum QualificationsProven ability to manage oneself, work to achieve goals.College level degree in enology, food science, distillation, or related field.Previous experience in a winery, brewery, or food production facility.Ability to safely operate machinery.Must be able to read and write basic English.Basic Math.Proficiency in MS Excel and other standard MS Office applications.Ability to lift, push, pull and carry up to 50 lbs.Sit for extended periods of time.Stand for extended periods.Drive long distances (must have clean driving record).Flexible availability. We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range, and the range may be modified in the future. An employee’s pay position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but limited to, the prevailing minimum wage for the location, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, shift, travel requirements, sales or revenue-based metrics, any collective bargaining agreements, and business or organizational needs.
