DESCRIPTION | Incumbent is responsible for counseling and assisting persons in the United States Armed Forces, veterans, spouses, surviving spouses, children, parents and other dependents in preparing and presenting claims to the Department of Veterans Affairs or claims for any type of benefits from federal, state or local agencies.

DIFFICULTY OF WORK Work consists of complex, varied, non-standardized tasks, processes and procedures including researching, interpreting and applying state and federal laws as well as following established laws, rules, regulations, and policies.
RESPONSIBILITY Incumbent must prioritize duties and file for benefits in a timely manner. Incumbent reviews financial assistance cases and VA claims daily, makes decisions on client needs, referrals, application of financial assistance policies and investigations. Errors could result in the loss of income and/or healthcare benefits for claimants.
PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS Incumbent works independently and has contact with co-workers, public and private sector employees, and the general public. The purpose of these contacts is for the review and processing of VA or financial assistance claims and to assist veterans with any services available.
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK ENVIRONMENT Physical Requirements: Incumbent performs sedentary work that may require the lifting of up to 50 pounds. Physical Activity: Incumbent performs the following physical activities: reaching, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Visual Activity: Incumbent performs work where the seeing job is close to the eyes. Job Location: Incumbent works inside and is not exposed to adverse environmental conditions.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS | Must be an honorably discharged U.S. veteran or the spouse or child of a veteran. Associate degree or equivalent experience needed. Experience in social work, counseling or a related field helpful. Must have a valid driver’s license and meet the county’s current vehicle use requirement. Must pass a US government background investigation, local government background check, and various requirements for the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Ohio Department of Veteran Services.
