The City of Kent is currently accepting applications for Custodial Lead. This position requires an individual who can effectively clean and maintain the City’s buildings and facilities, while also planning and directing the work of employees performing similar duties. The hours of work are 2:30 to 11:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. An employee in this position may be required to work weekend shifts as needed for special projects. The ideal candidate will have two (2) years of related experience with some public contact, to include one (1) year in a lead capacity.
This is a full-time, benefited position represented by the AFSCME bargaining unit. The City may establish a non-ranked applicant list for this classification that would be in effect for up to 12 months.

SALARY:
$4,944.00- $6,052.00, monthly, depending on qualifications
GENERAL PURPOSE:
Under the direction of the Custodial Supervisor, operate in a lead custodial capacity in organizing, scheduling, assigning and performing the general cleaning and care of assigned buildings and facilities.
Work is characterized by lead custodial responsibilities and duties including, but not limited to, scheduling, coordinating, assigning and ensuring the proper completion of the work of assigned custodial staff; mopping; sweeping; vacuuming; washing windows; collecting trash; cleaning building surfaces, restrooms and walks; setting up and taking down classes/events and responding to clean up requests.
Work is performed under general supervision. The supervisor defines objectives, priorities, and deadlines; and assists the incumbent with unusual situations, which do not have clear objectives or precedents. The incumbent plans and carries out assignments and handles problems and deviations in accordance with instructions, policies, procedures and/or accepted practices. Work is evaluated for technical soundness and conformity to practice and policy.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Plan, organize, schedule and coordinate the cleaning and care of assigned City facilities and other areas as assigned.
Train, prioritize, assign and direct work of other custodial staff. Inspect work of assigned staff to ensure proper completion.
Determine the means, methods and materials for performing work.
Operate and demonstrate the proper use and care of tools and motorized cleaning equipment; maintain tools and equipment in a safe, clean and efficient condition.
Participate in and support all custodial related tasks as performed by Custodian positions such as mopping; sweeping; vacuuming; washing windows, doors and blinds; collecting trash; emptying ash trays; cleaning, polishing and sanitizing building surfaces, restrooms, kitchens and walkways; buffing, burnishing and refinishing floors, rubber mats, stairways and stairs.
Assure compliance with established safety procedures and requirements; interpret and explain procedures, rules and regulations as appropriate.
Maintain records and prepare reports related to personnel; maintain and keep current SDS binders for all City facilities; perform inspections twice annually or as deemed necessary, service requests and inventory.
Assist supervisor with creating, monitoring and completing work requests through CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System)
Inspect buildings and fixtures for maintenance requirements; make minor repairs to building maintenance equipment.
Asist and delegate the setup/takedown for classes, meetings and special events by setting up tables and chairs.
Walk through assigned building to ensure security of building according to established procedures.
Communicate with tenants, other City personnel and the public as needed to clarify work requests, coordinate cleaning schedules and respond to inquiries/complaints regarding the custodial care and cleanliness of assigned buildings.
Maintain the custodial cleaning supplies closet by maintaining adequate inventories and preparing equipment specifications as required. Provide input and recommendations regarding the Custodial budget.
Assist in coordinating, monitoring and performing refinishing of gymnasium floors, racquetball court floors and other wood, brick and vinyl flooring annually.
Actively support the vision, mission, values and goals of the department and the City.
PERIPHERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Attend a variety of meetings; attend and schedule training sessions as needed.
Perform related duties as assigned.
SUCCESSFUL INCUMBENTS FOR THIS POSITION WILL:
HAVE THE KNOWLEDGE OF:
Modern cleaning methods including proper equipment and materials used in custodial work and the cleaning and preservation of floors, carpets, furniture, walls and fixtures.
Applicable health and safety regulations.
The requirements of maintaining City buildings in a safe, clean and orderly condition.
Facility and room setup requirements.
Basic recordkeeping techniques.
Correct English grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary as it pertains to the job

Safely and effectively operating and demonstrating a variety machines, tools and equipment used in custodial work such as those listed below.
Safely and appropriately preparing and using cleaning compounds.
Establishing work priorities and planning work accordingly.
Training and providing work direction for assigned personnel.
Assuring compliance with established safety rules and regulations.
Inspecting work and assuring the cleanliness and sanitation of assigned buildings and facilities.
HAVE THE ABILITY TO:
Perform heavy manual labor involved in custodial work.
Maintain records and prepare reports.
Make minor repairs to building maintenance equipment.
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others using interpersonal skills effectively in a tactful, patient and courteous manner.
Develop and implement work methods and procedures.
Understand and follow oral and written directions.
Set up/take down tables and chairs in required configurations for classes and special events.
Read, comprehend, apply and explain instructions, business correspondence, memorandums, rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
Add, subtract, multiply and divide using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.
SKILLS FOR THE POSITION MAY BE GAINED THROUGH EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, RELEVANT JOB EXPERIENCE or a COMBINATION, SUCH AS:
Education: High school diploma, general education degree (GED), or equivalent; and
Experience: Two (2) years of related experience with some public contact including one (1) year in a lead capacity.
LICENSES AND OTHER INFORMATION:
Valid Washington State Driver’s license, or the ability to obtain within thirty (30) days of employment.
Must successfully pass the City’s pre-employment driver’s records check; successfully complete the City’s Defensive Driving Course; and maintain an acceptable driving record.
Bilingual skills are highly desirable.
Must successfully pass a position specific background inquiry
MACHINES, TOOLS, AND EQUIPMENT USED:
Standard and specialized hand and powered machines, tools and equipment used in general custodial work including, but not limited to, vacuum cleaners, floor waxers and buffers.
Other equipment and/or materials used include, but are not limited to, safety glasses or goggles, ear plugs or muffs, rubber or plastic gloves, dust masks, eye shields and cleaning solutions.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is performed in an indoor environment. Employee may sometimes be exposed to outdoor weather conditions. Employee may be required to work in the evenings and on weekends. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to dust, fumes or airborne particles.
The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals and outside weather conditions. Employee may be exposed to individuals who are irate or hostile. Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
