We are a technology nonprofit that builds, owns and operates the North Carolina Research and Education Network (NCREN), which has successfully served research, education, non-profit health care, public safety, libraries, and other community institutions with Internet connectivity and related services for more than 30 years. NCREN is the fundamental broadband infrastructure for 750 of these institutions including K-20 education in North Carolina. As one of the nation’s premier middle-mile fiber networks, we are seeking a Network Architect to support our key project operations and serve as a subject matter expert for the team.

What You Will Be Doing
- Oversee the development of data networking/telecommunications service offerings
- Manage quality assurance of network device software, configurations, security posture, and data networking best practices
- Develop technical requirements and responses for RFPs/RFIs/RFQs/IFBs/etc.
- Participate in proof-of-concept labs and associated activities
- Create network device “bills of material” and capital budgets
- Handle pre-sales engineering activities as required
- Represent the company at Research & Education-focused events, both national and local
What You Need for this Position
- 7+ years of experience in Data Networking
- 3+ years of experience in hands-on design for data/telecommunications networks or service offerings
- Strong background in large data network environments (ISP, Research & Education, or Corporate Enterprise)
- Subject matter expert in TCP/IP, IPv4/IPv6, Carrier Ethernet (E-LINE, E-LAN), Routing, Switching, EoMPLS, VPLS, MPLS Layer 3 VPN, Segment Routing, EVPN, SD-WAN, BGP, IS-IS, OSPF, QoS, GRE, IPSec, etc.
- Extensive experience with carrier class routers and switches (DWDM-based optical platforms and passive DWDM/CWDM technologies
- Well versed in IOS XR, Junos, or other similar network operating systems
- Working knowledge of Linux/Unix and scripting languages with an emphasis on network automation (i.e. Python 3)
