Job Description Summary
The College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (AHSS) at Eastern Oregon University (EOU) invites applications for a full-time, tenure track position in our new undergraduate Public Relations program. The position is a full-time, tenure track faculty appointment at the Assistant or Associate Professor rank. Position reports directly to the Dean of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (AHSS).
Appointment begins September 16, 2022.
The new BA/BS in Public Relations is housed in the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences to maintain a foundation in human communication, the humanities, digital rhetoric and media, and applied communication while drawing on interdisciplinary knowledge and skills in writing, social sciences, marketing and statistical analysis. Students will be led through three central components of study that will permeate every level of the curriculum, requiring students to learn, practice and refine skills in and theoretical understanding of: writing and media production, social media development and management, and ethical communication and advocacy. The full degree will be offered both online and on campus in La Grande, serving a diverse population of traditional and adult learners with many backgrounds and interests.
Compensation is based on the successful applicant’s relevant teaching experience. This position comes with a generous healthcare package for both employee and all family dependents, paid holidays, paid sick time, state employee retirement pension, and other fringe benefits.
Responsibilities
The typical tenure-track teaching load at EOU is 36 quarter credits a year (appx. 3 courses per term) with an additional 9 credits dedicated to scholarship, service to the institution, and community outreach. The successful candidate’s teaching responsibilities will include on-campus and online courses in public relations at the undergraduate level, especially Public Relations and Social Media, Public Relations Writing and Production, and Public Relations Cases and Campaigns. An option to teach other courses in the curriculum may be possible given need and the candidate’s expertise area, as well as develop and teach new courses or special topics in Public Relations. The candidate will engage students in both theory in the field as well as guide students through professional application experiences.
We seek collaborative, creative individuals with a demonstrated commitment to honoring diverse voices, making college success possible for at-risk students, and creating inclusive college cultures that represent the values and experiences of all students. Engaging students through project-based and experiential learning opportunities will be a key component of the the student experience (through capstone projects and internship supervision), as well as interdisciplinary collaboration across programs. Ongoing scholarly research and participation in academic advising, campus committees, curriculum development, and community outreach are expected.
As the inaugural faculty member in a new bachelor’s degree, this candidate has the potential to assume a central leadership role, collaborating with peers across the College to plan for the program’s future. An interdisciplinary committee of peers will be developed to support onboarding this faculty member and advocate for the program’s success.
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates with a Master’s degree in Public Relations or related field with many years of successful experience in the industry will be considered. However, a PhD is preferred. ABD candidates will be considered (with degree conferral no later than September 2022).
Evidence of successful teaching at the undergraduate level.
To be hired at Associate Professor rank, a minimum of five years of teaching experience and tenured status at another institution are required. At point of hire, up to two years of experience may be approved and applied toward early tenure eligibility at EOU.
Demonstrated commitment to access, equity, and diversity, including the ability to work effectively with under-served and under-prepared college students.
Recent and relevant scholarship and/or successful creative production in the field or industry.
Must satisfactorily complete EOU criminal and credential background check. Having a criminal history is not an automatic bar to employment.

Preferred Qualifications
A PhD in Public Relations or closely related field by the start date (September 2022).
Evidence of conscientious academic advising, working well in collaboration with colleagues and community partners, and a demonstrated record of commitment to student success in both face-to-face and online courses.
Evidence of successful interdisciplinary collaborations with colleagues in curriculum development and/or experiential learning opportunities for students. Candidates applying for Associate rank should speak to successes in leadership roles in these areas.
Experience, training or certification in using an LMS (EOU uses Canvas) to deliver coursework and engage students meaningfully in their learning.
Professional experience developing or managing social media campaigns, podcasts, and/or other media production is highly sought.

Salary: Assistant/Associate professor-rank salary is determined by weighted years of service based upon the faculty union contract.
