an Equipment Operator Journey 1 / 2 in Skagway to help us Keep Alaska Moving!
What you will be doing:
Depending on qualifications, you will perform equipment operations commensurate with a Journey-level 1 or 2 operator. The main focus will be to utilize various types of heavy and light duty equipment to maintain the State of Alaska’s infrastructure and ensure it is in a safe and fully operable condition for use by the traveling public. Journey level 1 operators use of heavy-duty equipment will be in a training capacity.

The Skagway Maintenance Station is made up of a three-person crew who work cooperatively to operate and maintain the public airport, State highways, and roads.
Our crews operate and maintain these airports and roadways in all conditions, year around. Whether plowing snow in near “white-out” conditions to prepare the Airport for normal aircraft operations; maintaining roadways for the traveling public; repairing asphalt on paved surfaces; conducting security inspections on at the airport; maintaining airport lighting systems; clearing right-of-ways and airport safety areas of vegetation overgrowth; or training for any emergency that may occur. This position is located in Skagway, AK. This position is full-time, working in a friendly group environment. This is hands-on, in-the-field position that won’t keep you locked to a desk all day. May require travel to other stations, possibly for extended periods, during the summer months to complete projects.

FLEXIBLY STAFFED
This position is flexibly staffed. This vacancy may be filled at either the Equipment Operator Journey 1 or Equipment Operator Journey 2 level depending on the applicant’s training and/or experience. Please respond to all of the minimum qualification questions. If filled at a lower level, incumbent will have the opportunity to advance to the next level upon management’s assessment that the incumbent is performing adequately and has successfully completed the training plan and meets the minimum qualifications of the higher level.

ARMS & AMMUNITION REQUIREMENT
This position requires the use or possession of a firearm or ammunition. In accordance with the federal Omnibus Consolidated Appropriations Act of 1997 (PL 104-208), if you have been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence, you may not hold this position.
A “misdemeanor crime of domestic violence” is an offense that is(1) a misdemeanor under Federal or state law; and (2) has, as an element, the use or attempted use of physical force, or the threatened use of a deadly weapon, committed by a current or former spouse, parent, or guardian of the victim, by a person with whom the victim shares a child in common, by a person who is cohabiting with or has cohabited with the victim as a spouse, parent, or guardian, or by a person similarly situated to a spouse, parent, or guardian of the victim.
If you have ever been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence, do NOT apply for this position.
COMMERCIAL DRIVER’S LICENSE REQUIRED
This position requires the incumbent to possess a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) per federal regulations (49 CFR 383), to register with the federal CDL Drug & Alcohol Testing Clearinghouse prior to performing safety-sensitive duties, and to provide consent to the Employer to review driver information in accordance with 49 CFR 382.
Equipment Operatory Journey 1
Hire approval is conditional in that the proposed appointee successfully obtains a Class A Alaska Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within six (6) months of hire, and signs an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment.
Equipment Operator Journey 2
A Class A Alaska Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required at time of hire. A conditional hire approval can only be given for endorsements. This means that the proposed appointee must successfully obtain an N-Tanker endorsement within 90 days of hire and sign an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment.
DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION & PUBLIC FACILITIES DRUG AND ALCOHOL POLICY
Selected candidates must comply with the DOT&PF Drug and Alcohol Policy and procedures and CANNOT start work in a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) position until Management Services or designee has received confirmation of the proposed appointee passing the required Pre-Employment drug test. According to federal regulations, all violations and refusals will be maintained with the Federal CDL Drug & Alcohol Testing Clearinghouse database.
WORK EXPERIENCE
