Summary:
The Respiratory Care Graduate position transitions the new graduate into a Respiratory Care Practitioner role post-graduation. The individual will take the skills and knowledge gained in school and clinical experience to work directly with a preceptor to become competent with all equipment, modalities and clinical patient assessments needed to care for patients in the hospital setting. The Respiratory Care Graduate position will provide direct patient care in accordance with the hospital’s objectives, policies and procedures and display the core values of Froedtert under supervision of a licensed RCP.
Responsibilities:
Job Standard 2:
CLINICAL PRACTICE – GENERAL CARE: Routinely integrates patient diagnostic data, response-to-therapy, and physiologic profile to create a plan-of-care that is sound and consistent with the department standard of care. CLINICAL PRACTICE – GENERAL CARE: Applies Respiratory Care consults using clinical practice guidelines with precision and compliance. CLINICAL PRACTICE – GENERAL CARE: Administers basic and advanced respiratory therapeutic interventions ( e.g. oxygen therapy, bronchial hygiene, hyperinflation, MDI/DPI , Nebulized medication, IPPB (FMLH only), Chest PT, Bedside spirometry (CHD only), Non-Invasive Ventilation, Chest Wall Oscillation, SPAG Unit (FMLH only), etc. ) with proficiency. CLINICAL PRACTICE – GENERAL CARE: Uses effective time management in work organization and triaging of care. Consistently handles shift assignment without complaints or interventions. CLINICAL PRACTICE – GENERAL CARE: Reviews all the key respiratory assessment elements (pulse rate, respiratory rate, breath sounds, cough/sputum, chest wall/movement, perceived work-of-breathing) in patients cared for. CLINICAL PRACTICE – GENERAL CARE: Routinely interprets basic diagnostic and monitoring data (e.g., spirometry, CXR, culture and sensitivity, blood gases) in patients cared for with proficiency. CLINICAL PRACTICE – Performs cleaning, calibration of equipment, and adequately stocks supplies in all respiratory care areas.
Job Standard 3:
TEAMWORK: Displays and models a working knowledge of the role the Respiratory Care Practitioner plays in the healthcare setting through multidisciplinary collaboration with other memebers of the healthcare team. TEAMWORK: Works closely with an assigned mentor/preceptor to learn techniques that can be used in developing relationships with physicians, nurses, and other multidisciplinary team members. TEAMWORK: Works at developing relationships with various levels of co-workers within the respiratory care department to obtain an understanding of how to relate to patients, families and other members of the healthcare team.
Job Standard 4:
QUALITY CARE & PATIENT SAFETY: Demonstrates an understanding of quality & safety as it relates to patient care and job performance. QUALITY CARE & PATIENT SAFETY: Develops a patient care plan and relating all facets of the patients care to co-workers and other members of the healthcare team. QUALITY CARE & PATIENT SAFETY: Consistently meets acceptable threshold ( > 95%) for barcode compliance of patient medications. QUALITY CARE & PATIENT SAFETY: Routinely applies new techniques and procedures with proficiency within 30-60 days of training/orientation. QUALITY CARE & PATIENT SAFETY: Understands the need for compliance of National Patient Safety Goals when applied to Critical Alarms, Cleanliness of Equipment, and Hand Hygiene and supports culture of safety. QUALITY CARE & PATIENT SAFETY: Consistently documents all episodes of care provided to the patients as required in the hospitals EMR system and billing system on a real-time basis.
Job Standard 5:
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: Assumes responsibility for self-development through continuing education pathways. Evidenced by direct observation, interview, peer feedback and documentation. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: Successfully completes all of the departmental, hospital and system competencies required for job category within the designated timeframe. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: Supports the advancement of the respiratory care profession by attending department meetings, education offerings, and other required department initiatives.
Other information:
EXPERIENCE DESCRIPTION: Successful completion of a course of study in Respiratory Care is required.
EXPERIENCE PREFERRED: Clinical experience in hospital, home care or skilled nursing facility is preferred.
EDUCATION DESCRIPTION: Graduate from an accredited Respiratory Therapy program with an Associates Degree is required.
EDUCATION PREFERRED: Graduate from an accredited Respiratory Therapy program with Bachelors Degree is preferred.
TRAINING DESCRIPTION:
TRAINING PREFERRED: Membership in the American Association for Respiratory Care ( AARC ).

LICENSURE DESCRIPTION: Staff must produce a valid Respiratory Care Practitioner license issued by the State of Wisconsin with in 120 days from date of graduation. Staff who fail to meet the requirements will be placed into progressive corrective per policy FH-HR.001. (If full application is in review by the State of Wisconsin Licensing board the individual will not progress into the corrective action per policy FH-HR.001). Basic Life Support ( BLS ) is required.
