Performs difficult and specialized skilled mechanical work on a variety of automotive, construction, and specialized equipment. An employee in this class serves as a skilled mechanic in the garage. The employee performs automotive and mechanical work repairing and overhauling gas and diesel motors and engines and performing preventative maintenance. The work requires operation of various testing equipment and hand tools in order to support the work activities. The employee is subject to hazards associated with mechanical repairs including working in both inside and outside environments, and exposure to various hazards such as loud noises, vibration, moving mechanical parts, electrical current, chemicals, biological substances, fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and oils. Work is performed under the supervision of the Public Works Supervisor. The employee receives assignments and instructions from the supervisor and is evaluated by observation and the quality of the work performed.
Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, hearing, and repetitive motions. Must be able to perform very heavy exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally; and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently; and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Must possess the visual acuity to operate machines and equipment including close inspection of moving and small parts, using measurement devices, assembly, and fabrication of parts, and to maintain records. Graduation from high school supplemented by course work in mechanical and/or electrical trade skills, and considerable responsible experience in repairing automotive, construction, and specialized equipment and small engines; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Applicant may be subject to complete a drug screen, criminal history check, physical and driver’s license check.
