DEFINITION

Create marketing, outreach, and promotional materials for Town of Danville projects, initiatives, and programs. Provides support to all Town departments through the development, design, and production of print and digital collateral. Utilizing professional design software and an understanding of brand consistency and visual messaging, will develop the quarterly printed newsletter and activity guide, social media graphics, project fact sheets, event posters and flyers, and other materials as needed for public outreach.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives direction from the Public Information Officer. This position does not exercise supervision of others.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

Essential duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

• Utilize professional computer graphic programs such as Adobe Creative Suite to design layouts for brochures, flyers, publications, infographics, reports, forms, maps, social media posts, and public presentations.
• Create marketing/promotional materials for Town projects, initiatives, and programs using basic information to write short copy and design the materials following Town style and brand.
• Develop outreach materials appropriate to communication goals, including proper brand implementation, integration of print and digital media, and solutions according to budget.
• Select and/or take photographs appropriate to the message conveyed through the materials, working with a smartphone as well as online stock photography sites.
• Create designs primarily using Adobe Creative Suite software, specifically InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop, as well as advanced print PDF creation and editing within Acrobat Pro.
• Meet with department staff to determine the scope of the project and clarify the intended message and the proposed audience for the material.
• Assist with administering the department’s presence on the website; support content development for communicating the department’s messages on events and issues.
• Stay up-to-date with design trends, tools, and technologies, and make recommendations to enhance the City’s visual identity and messaging.
• Maintain records of work requests and completed projects.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

• Graphic design and desktop publishing applications (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator).
• Basic digital photography skills using smartphone, such as composition, lighting, and resolution.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word and PowerPoint.

Ability to:

• Communicate clearly and collaborate to find effective design solutions.
• Manage multiple projects of varying size, priority, and urgency while keeping projects on track through interdepartmental review processes.
• Provide excellent service and responsiveness to internal customers.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience:

A minimum of five (5) years of professional graphic design, including print production and digital content creation for a single client, such as in-house creative or brand management.

Education:

Equivalent to completion of a bachelor’s degree in communications, graphic design, art, public relations, or related field. In-house or government design experience preferred, but not required.

LICENSE(S) AND CERTIFICATION(S)

Possession of a valid California State Driver’s License, or license in another state with the ability to obtain a California license within 30 days of hire.
