$21.05 hourly. Actual salary negotiable based on experience and qualifications. South Area/Melbourne/Sarno Landfill. Work schedule is variable and includes evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed. Performs skilled crafts and trades work in the operation and routine maintenance of heavy equipment and may perform related manual labor. Employee may rotate among various pieces of equipment or may be permanently assigned to a specific piece of equipment.
REQUIREMENTS: Two (2) years of experience in the operation and routine maintenance of heavy equipment; OR one (1) year of experience as a Brevard County Heavy Equipment Operator I PLUS completion of all of the Brevard County Mandatory Training for Development of New Employees classes and a current annual Performance Evaluation score of 3.5 or greater; OR successful completion of a six (6) month heavy equipment operator training program from an accredited school PLUS six (6) months of experience in the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment. Successful completion of coursework in heavy equipment operation at an accredited post-secondary school may be substituted on a year for year basis for a maximum of one (1) year (1,080 class hours [1 school year] = 1 year of experience; 120 class hours = 1 month of experience). Additional qualifying education and/or experience may be substituted on a year for year basis.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must possess, or obtain prior to employment, a valid Florida Driver’s license and maintain said license during the term of employment. Must be able to pass a verbal proficiency test and effectively demonstrate the ability to safely operate two (2) of the following types of heavy equipment: Track Hoe, Dozer, Rubber Tire Back Hoe, Grader, Loader, Rubber Tire Excavator, and/or Compactor. Must attend all of the Brevard County Employee Development Program Phase I classes OR Employee Development Phase II classes within eighteen (18) months of employment or promotion to the Heavy Equipment Operator II classification. In the event of a hurricane, major storm, natural or man-made disaster that may threaten the area, the employee will be required to perform emergency duties as directed.
