Hiram College invites applications for the immediate position of Area Coordinator for First Year, All Gender, and Honors Living Learning Communities. The position of Area Coordinator is a full-time, 12-month live-in professional staff position in the Department of Residence Life. This position reports directly to the Assistant Director of Residence Life.

The Area Coordinator is responsible for the supervision of Resident Assistants, hall management, and student development across campus. Individuals in this position must have the ability and willingness to assume shared responsibility for campus-wide on-call duty and respond to crisis and emergency situations. This position will share duties with commuter services and will advise commuter student programming initiatives. Additionally, this position will alternate spearheading the RA recruitment and selection process and the RA training planning processes on a biannual basis with colleagues. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
Staff/Student Leadership Development• Develop a positive and engaging community to foster a sense of belonging where students can build positive relationships with one another.• Maintain high visibility and availability, including attending community events, regularly touring the community, and interacting with residents.• Know the residents and provide support for their socio-emotional development.• Utilize institutional data to assess and respond to student needs.• Implement and regularly assess the programming model used in the residence halls ensuring that the programming model is meeting the needs of the residential students.• Mediate conflicts between residents when intervention beyond the Resident Assistant is warranted.
Programming• Supervise and evaluate an average staff size of 15-16 RAs.• Counsel and supervise the RA staff toward the goals of staff cohesiveness, positive attitudes, and good communication.• Set goals with the RA staff for their assigned areas.• Conduct weekly/ bi-weekly meetings with individual RAs.• Host weekly staff meetings to communicate upcoming events, and discuss community concerns.• Ensure staff members are appropriately confronting and documenting behavioral issues and concerns.• Provide regular formal and information feedback regarding job performance.
Administrative Responsibilities• Perform administrative duties associated with summer projects and assignments.• Report, track, and follow up on maintenance issues with physical plant.• Serve as the primary contact for parents and family members of residents.• Administer student check-in, check-out, and room changes; assist with room condition reports and damage billing processes.• Participate in the recruitment, selection, and training of staff members for the Office of Residence Life.• Attend and participate in weekly Residence Life meetings.• Serve as a role model for all hall staff and residents in personal and professional behaviors.• Demonstrate a consistent commitment to diversity by collaborating with individuals from different race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, ability, ideology, religion, and national origin backgrounds.• Create and maintain positive professional relationships within the department and across the university.• Represent the department at campus wide events and assigned college committees.
Commuter Services Expectations• Serve as the Advisor for CAB (Commuter Activities Board)• Work with Student Leaders to create programs and initiatives that benefit the community.• Maintain commuter programming budget along with the Assistant Director of Residence Life and Commuter Services.• Ensure that commuter students are aware of their resources on campus.• Host a minimum of two programs per semester specifically for commuter students.
