Homes for the Homeless, Inc. (HFH) is seeking a dedicated and creative Recreation Coordinator to organize and lead afternoon/evening activities that enrich, educate, and bring much-needed fun to homeless children. Our transitional family housing center in Jamaica, Queens has a Recreation group for elementary school children as young as 5 years old, a middle school group, and a teen group. Our ideal candidate aspires to be a role model for their students, a team player with their coworkers, is knowledgeable and compassionate about poverty and trauma, and absolutely loves fun.ABOUT HOMES FOR THE HOMELESS, INC.Homes for the Homeless, Inc. (HFH) is a non-profit social services organization operating family shelters throughout NYC that serve as a hub of opportunity for families both residing in shelter as well as those in the neighboring community. On-site programs range from childcare, early childhood education centers, afterschool clubs and programs, and youth recreation activities, such as sports teams, to housing assistance, case management, parenting workshops, career and job vocational training, support groups and substance abuse assistance, and family engagement and recreation events for the whole family.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESOrganize, attend and supervise field trips.Organize and supervise team games and sporting events.Lead arts & crafts projectsEnsure the safety and engagement of children in assigned activitiesAssist with events, fairs, holiday parties, and theatrical plays.Additional duties and projects as assigned by the Assistant Manager of Recreation.QUALIFICATIONSHigh school diploma or equivalent required; some college preferred.Experience leading activities with children or teens.Competency in youth development and child careGroup management, problem-solving and conflict resolution skillsAbility to communicate and work effectively and respectfully with people from all walks of life.COMPENSATION/EEO:In order to attract and retain a high-performance workforce, Homes for the Homeless offers a dynamic and rewarding work environment, with a focus on ensuring an appropriate work-life balance.
