We currently have an opening for an Industrial Designer at our headquarters in Berkeley, IL. In this role, you’ll have the opportunity to develop functional, affordable, design-forward storage and organization products that improve the lives of our consumers.
Overview of Position
• Design products from concept through production in a broad range of categories and product formats (from basic to more elevated) and for both private label and Honey Can Do brands.
• Translate conceptual ideas into clear, compelling sketches, incorporate design insight and inspiration from a variety of sources, refine concepts into technically feasible and cost-effective solutions, and balance design process with a sense of urgency.
• Interact daily with product, sourcing, marketing, and sales teams in both the US and Asia.
• Fluency in Photoshop, Illustrator and 3D modeling, experience with product mock-ups and prototyping, and a “test-fail-design-test” mentality.
• Strong passion for products within the housewares industry and an appreciation for the consumer we are reaching.
Job Responsibilities
• Collaborate with Product Managers to create next-generation products that meet the needs of our retailers and consumers in assigned categories.
• Research industry trends and seek inspiration for new concepts though store visits, trade shows, online research, new manufacturing processes, etc.
• Collect images across categories, demographics, formats, and industries for inspiration.
• Identify new categories to complement existing Honey Can Do assortments.
• Develop annual design trend boards, including color, material, pattern, form, and texture.
• Work with Product Managers to determine product direction based on trend analysis, sales data, customer direction/feedback and industry outlook.
• Concept ideation: develop initial sketches and review with team for feedback.
• Concept refinement: refine selected concepts and add specs and dimensions for quoting with factories.
• Customer presentations: create photorealistic renderings for retailer presentations, with materials, feature callouts, color options, and overall dimensions included.
• Design revisions: revise concepts based on sample reviews, pricing, and customer feedback.
• Work cross-functionally with marketing and product teams on packaging, merchandising, and graphics.
• Communicate with sourcing team to clarify product specs and answer technical questions on drawings and product intent.
• Attend customer meetings to support and explain designs, trends, innovation, and NPD.
• Support sales team on channel-specific design efforts, including customer-specific designs and product and merchandising renderings.
• Assemble and review product samples and report insights to the team.
• Maintain project list and timeline to ensure deliverables are being tracked and met.
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree required
• 5-7 years of industrial design experience in hard goods
• Experience in retail industry with consumer packaged goods products is ideal
• Strong organizational skills with ability to complete multiple projects simultaneously in a deadline-driven environment
• Creative problem solver with attention to detail
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Strong sense of urgency
• Advanced-level proficiency in Photoshop, Illustrator, and 3D computer modeling
• Strong Microsoft Office skills, particularly in PowerPoint and Excel
