Known as Ski Town USA, the City of Steamboat Springs, Colorado (pop. 13,156, elev. 6,867 ft., 9.9 sq mi), is an iconic international ski destination, which has produced more Winter Olympians (over 100) than any other city in North America. With roots as an old cowboy mountain town, which later became a resort town, Steamboat Springs remains one of the most desirable locations in all of the Rocky Mountains. The 2024 budget of $140.2M (GF $63.9M, reserves $23.6M) supports 353 FTE, including PTE and seasonal.
This opportunity is available with the retirement (October, 2023) of the former human resources and risk director, who served the city capably for over seven years. Reporting directly to the city manager, the director oversees a departmental budget of $1,940,000 (HR $662,000, Risk $1,278,000) supporting 4.0 FTE: the director, a senior generalist (HR and risk), and two other generalists.
A bachelor’s degree in human resources, business or public administration, or related field, and at least five years of professional human resources experience, including at least two years of supervisory experience, are required. Any equivalent combination of education and training that would provide the required knowledge and skills to perform the job may be considered at the city’s sole option. Knowledge of all federal and state employment laws, especially all recent amendments in Colorado, is required. Professional certifications (PHR or SPHR through SHRM, or CP or SCP through IPMA) are preferred. Direct experience with risk management is desirable.
