The Artificial Intelligence Lab Director is responsible for offering expertise and
educational programs to support learning and development in AI to IMSA students, faculty, and the community at large. This includes
seminars, workshops, advocacy for the experimentation of AI in curriculum, and other programming and professional development. As such, the
Director ensures continuous improvement in these areas to support the mission, vision, and strategic goals of the Academy.Â
IMSA’s 2033 vision is to build curricular and lab space capacity on the Aurora campus to support the growth and experimentation of
artificial intelligence and its applications. The Center for Artificial Intelligence promotes AI literacy, research, and education,
providing lab space for learning/professional development opportunities that equip students, staff, and faculty to thrive in a
technology-focused future. The Center is designed to be a venue that encourages entry into AI curriculum to solve real-world challenges that
advance the human condition regardless of research focus, academic area, or position. It enhances the ability of faculty to do work at the
leading edge of AI and empowers an intellectual community that crosses disciplinary boundaries, schools, and beyond into the future of work
and life.
The position reports to the Director of Experiential Learning.
The internationally recognized Illinois Mathematics
and Science Academy® (IMSA) develops creative, ethical leaders in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. As a teaching and
learning laboratory created by the State of Illinois, IMSA enrolls academically talented Illinois students (grades 10–12) in its
advanced, residential college preparatory program. It also serves thousands of educators and students in Illinois and beyond through
innovative instructional programs that foster imagination and inquiry.

Responsibilities
Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Lead AI Strategy & Center for AI Lab Capabilities:
- Lead the
Center for AI lab ensuring clear and measurable goals/outcomes and vibrant best practices and educational programming for students and
staff, including faculty, in planning IMSA’s current and future of AI. - Develop and implement a build-out of the Center for AI
and its educational support capabilities, including teaching seminars and workshops focused on AI capabilities and applications. - Manage the daily operations and supervision of the Center for AI lab.
- Strategically adapt AI offerings to keep pace with
technological advances, and the changing learning needs of our students, staff, faculty, and external partners. - Lead the
integration of AI and machine learning for research, education, and AI literacy. - Stay updated on the latest advancements in AI,
machine learning, and related emerging technologies.- Build an AI foundation for incorporating generative AI, large language models,
etc., in our ecosystem and advocate for its use. - Keep abreast with AI developments, machine learning, and related trends.
- Implement best practices and standards for AI development and usage within the organization.
- Work with IT leadership to shape
planning for physical, data, networking, and application architectures required to support experiential learning of AI.
- Build an AI foundation for incorporating generative AI, large language models,
Coach and Collaborate:
- Serve as an AI expert in-residence, guiding faculty, staff, and students on AI
tools, principles, techniques, and cutting-edge digital technologies in response to institutional and program/discipline needs. - Support faculty with essential AI and digital literacy to build knowledge and gain experience.
- Provide consultation and
assistance to faculty and students on the development and use of AI technologies for research, engineering, and integration into classrooms
and student projects. - Mentor and provide technical guidance for AI-enabled solutions.
- Ensure responsible AI, including a
focus on soundness and fairness.- Identify and remove barriers to support access to students from all backgrounds.Â
- Advise colleagues and administration on a broad range of technology, strategy, and policy issues associated with AI, including the
security, privacy, and ethical usage of AI systems and data.
- Bring a diverse cohort of AI experts from a wide range of
industry and education experiences and backgrounds to broaden and deepen institutional knowledge. - Engage with internal and external
stakeholders to establish and foster understanding and adoption of AI initiatives for outreach to impact students and educators around the
state of Illinois. - Work closely with IMSA leaders to develop new external partnerships, strengthen Illinois hubs, connect to
mentors, and broaden internship and SIR opportunities.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS
The required qualifications for this position include:
- Strong education or industry
experience in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science, or a related field - Bachelor’s degree
in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science, or a related field and 6 years professional experience. - Effective communication with students, staff, parents, and external partners
- Active participation in a collaborative team
environment - Engagement in reflective professional practice
- Excellent interpersonal skills for working in a team
environment with the ability to function diplomatically and communicate effectively with colleagues, administrators, students, parents, and
the public - An appreciation and understanding of working with and attracting diverse populations
Preferred
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science, or a
related field. - Experience in curriculum design
- High school and/or higher education equivalent teaching experience
- Experience with Python and popular ML libraries such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, Keras, and OpenAI
- In-depth knowledge of
Object-Oriented Programming, and Software Development Lifecycle - Experience with APIs, Cloud environments, and Front-end
frameworks - Experience with data science & usage of large language modelsÂ
SALARY AND
BENEFITS:
Salary and benefits are commensurate with the training and experience expected at this level of employment.
Starting salary no less than $85,000. The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy offers an excellent comprehensive benefits package,
including health and retirement benefits. The State Universities Retirement System (SURS) is reciprocal with other Illinois public
retirement systems such as the Teachers’ Retirement Systems of Illinois (TRS) and the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF).
