This role will help drive and execute on the automation strategy related to the scale up and sustainment of wafer fabrication within Illuminas fast growing Flow Cell manufacturing line. This Staff / Sr. Staff Equipment Engineer will be responsible for leading and driving aspects of integration, implementation, service and setting up maintenance and training of manufacturing equipment. This role also includes being directly involved with installation, configuration, and repair of equipment, integrating equipment with information systems and validation and verification of the equipment in accordance with cGMP and/or GLP guidelines. Responsible for reviewing and preparing maintenance and operation protocols, approving calibration documents, and setting up calibration parameters. This role is part of our Equipment Engineering team, which leads troubleshooting with equipment and coordinates required repairs and complex maintenance tasks. The Staff / Sr. Staff Equipment Engineer will provide input regarding the selection of new equipment in support of new processes to support Illumina’s consumable roadmap.
Responsibilities:
Define and manage scale up strategy related to equipment automation
Learn and understand new tool sets, create a maintenance program, provide continuous improvements, improve reliability and high utilization rates.
Work with engineers to develop and implement procedures to reduce or eliminate sources of systematic equipment failures
Install new equipment and/or assist in the construction of new instruments and/or lab areas
Work with vendors to improve support for manufacturing equipment
Mange contractors and vendors at a technical level
Data-mining large datasets to uncover sources of errors
Understand internal instrument communication (RS232, SECS/GEM, PLC, IO)
Create innovative solutions to technical problems
Mentors engineers and techs to assist with technical knowledge and growth
Perform equipment repairs and train technicians to perform repairs and determine root cause of failures
Work with robotics and understand and troubleshoot controls and vision systems
Requirements:
Advanced electronics troubleshooting including reading of schematics/plumbing diagrams/blue prints, etc.
Automation or semiconductor experience in high volume manufacturing is required
Strong communication skills both verbal and documentation
Able to present ideas and presentation to senior management
Ability to learn and understand equipment failures and address root causes (prevention is key)
Ability to communicate and document equipment issues referencing data and available charts
Demonstrated continuous improved performance of equipment and ability to communicate improvements to process and R&D engineers
Demonstrated experience with hands on design and equipment/systems troubleshooting
Experience with Semiconductor equipment and fab best practices (preferred)
Experience with PLC or some program language (preferred)
Data automation scripting experience (R, Python, etc) is a plus
Travel up to 10%
Education and Experience:
10+ years of relevant experience supporting a high-volume MFG line or Semiconductor Fab/Foundry (preferred)
BS degree in engineering study with high-volume manufacturing experience
People management a plus
